I'm about to take a 2nd year off to work and I won't be entering first year til I'm 20, I'm just kinda unsure if I'll be too old with most first years being 17 and all my friends will be in third year. Is there anyone with a similar experience and how did you find it

Are you insane, I started at 22, I'd say 75% of my course are 20+! There aren't that many 17 year olds at college LOL.

I was 20 starting college and had been living out of home prior to this. Found people a bit immature for first year but evened out by 2nd year. You'll be fine.p

I was 19 and a half going into first year and I felt pretty old, most people I made friends with were 19 too but still younger than me. Not many mature students were on my course, and only a few were in their early 20's. My roommate only turned 18 a couple of months into college, and I knew another guy who wasn't 18 until the end of first year so there will be a few 17 year old's on the course too! But 20 isn't too old, don't worry :)

Yeah OP don't worry there's a high amount of young students out there who have dropped out if their course early on and many more will this year.
When/if you decide to do college you will have gained experience of life, you will be more focused and will most likely see out the 3 or 4 yrs of your course .

What are you doing for work?

I was 20 starting too. Most people were 19+ I found. There's always a good few late starters. Besides, you'll only be 2 years older than the youngest - hardly a massive generation gap!!

As for friends in 3rd year - I had that too, and while I would still meet up with them regularly, don't exclusively hang out with them, because they won't be there forever

Depending on course, there could be >400 in your lectures in 1st year.

More importantly, once you hit college, people don't care about certain things anymore. Who you decide to befriend, what you do with your free time, if you go to lectures or not, what age you are, if your hair different, etc etc.

You really won't stand out because of a tiny age difference.

As for your friends being in third year - you'll make new friends from your course. As already said, don't rely on hanging out with friends from home/school forever, you'll alienate yourself from your classmates and miss opportunities to make new friends.
