Eircom ZyXEL F1000- is wi fi just bad on this router or is there a fix?

A friend has got this router and just called to say wi fi is very poor in comparision to the old analogue router. They use an ipad air and are not a long way from router, signal keeps dropping. Eircom guy has suggested they get an extender but is this router just poor wi fi or is there either a known work round or is router faulty or useless for wi fi.

Set it to 20mhz instead of 40hmz, can help with stability. It really needs an antenna though, that's the issue.

i dont have that router so how do i set to 20mhz? a step by step and I'll tell them.
