Hopefully while the representatives are over at Sporting they can bring back Carvalho with them.

Didn't Rooney hand in a transfer request because of the club's lack of ambition in the transfer market. Chelsea and City were investing heavily while United were penny pinching. In fairness to Fergie he was a genius and still kept on winning but the long term affects are here now. City and Chelsea are full of star studded players and have pulled well clear of us. Rooney is not the brightest his heart was in the right place but he went about it wrong.

I always chuckle when I hear this old chestnut.

Players want world class players signed....in every position but their own. Rooney wasn't exactly thrilled when RvP was starting ahead of him under Fergie while he was stuck on the bench, was he?

That "ambition" nonsense was a charm offensive by his PR team because "I want more money" doesn't quite have the same ring to it as "I want the club to progress".

Don't get me wrong, I like Rooney, but when footballers claim crap like that it makes me laugh. It's up there with guys like Defoe, RvP, Drogba and Sturridge start talking post match about how it doesn't matter if they score as long as the team plays well. :p

Rooney is probably the best option at the moment, at least when the young lads at the club look at their captain they'll see someone who gives his all every time he steps on the pitch

See a lot of places linking us with Di Maria and Blind now, if it's a choice between them and Vidal I'd pick Vidal but I would obviously be happy enough if it was the other two, I can't see the club pulling off all three

what is their to chuckle about, when its actually what happened? Fergie confirmed it in his book and subsequent interviews that Rooney came to him and asked him to sign players, naming Ozil as one example.

and Rooney was not benched because of RVP, he was benched because he wasnt playing well. it was the likes of Welbeck who were taking his place, as generally Fergie played with 2 attackers in every game, sometimes even 3.

In fairness you haven't a clue if anything in your post is true or not

Fergie confirmed that Rooney was asking him to buy more players, but that doesn't fit your agenda now does it?

I have no agenda. You are just being precious.

Or….could it be that this was Rooney’s way out?

I’m sure he’s well advised (on £300k a week he’s certainly well advised!) and rather than go to Fergie and ask (again) for a transfer then manafacture one for himself by asking for something he knew wouldn’t be fortcoming? He must also have known (or his advisors certainly) that telling Ferguson how to do his job was going to ease him towards the door also.

According to Rooney he didn’t ask for a transfer but he certainly knew which buttons to push to make Chelsea’s interest more liekly to succeed.

He just missed the trick that Ferguson was retiring so p1ssing him off wasn’t going to get him his way.

A Liverpool fan, coming into the United thread and posting an opinion heavily influenced by tinted specs about the new captain hasn't got an agenda

I don't support Liverpool. But please, continue to embarrass yourself.

    Fair enough.

Apparently Sporting are planning on disciplining Rojo for unprofessionalism. They aren't happy he went to the press and he will not be playing this week and is told to watch the match at home. The Club President said they will discuss what disciplinary action to take for him. Also they have said they won't bow to player pressure.

Have to agree it is unprofessional to go to the press without getting approval from your current club. Looks like if he does go it will be a very bitter departure.

The requesting players be signed and doubting the club's ambition was the first transfer request, not the second last year.

I don't think it makes sense that Rooney went in and said give me more money and buy more players or I'll leave, I think his main reason was to get the club to buy players and he was offered a higher contract.

I don't think anyone would turn down +200k a week if offered

If it came out that he did it solely for the money then obviously we would be wrong

Rojo, it is claimed refused to train as he believes United met his buyout clause.

The real story is that could be the truth but the club wants more money since they only own 25% of him, and would only get £4 million of the £16 million.

Why don't you use regular font/color whatever it is?

It's a bad way to go about thing's alright , and I wasn't at all impressed with Rojo at the world cup so not particularly enthuiastic about him joining us.

As bad as it is for sporting player power will prevail shortly , they may disipline him , fine him , threaten him with the reservers but I guarantee before transfer deadline day he will get his move and they'll take the money on offer. 16 million is too much to waste at the end of the day to a club like that or any club.

Sky sports news interviewed Vincent Kompany about Rooney being made United captain, he said he has been there a long time and so on then after getting bored with the reporter, he said he really just wanted to concentrate on City and he couldn't care less about who is the captain of United.

Well that's their own problem for not buying out his contract not Utd's or his. 16 million is a fair price for him wouldn't pay a penny more.

Think he said before that as he works in an office and doesn't want to be seen posting here all day he types his posts up in outlook or some other program and copies them over which can screw with the formatting.

If he typed it up in notepad or copied it to notepad first before copying it to boards then it would remove any formatting.

That drives me mad, it's their own fault for only signing a quarter of a player in the first place! Did they not see that coming like??

Anything really concrete about Vidal possible transfer?

IMO Rooney's raise last year was based on him agreeing to stay through whatever the next few years brings.

He was their only World Class player with a good few years left in him at the time. He's more or less been a one club man but I think it's fair enough that when things were going tits up under Moyes, he said something along the lines of 'I'll give you the rest of my career and help you through this transition but if you want me to turn down all the medals I'd win at Chelsea under Jose, then I need more money'

After that I think he's there for good tbh and is a fairly decent captain pick.

With pre-season now over and done with, what outward activity do you guys want to see?

    Based on this squad.

    Sell:

    Ben Amos
Antonio Valencia (unrealistic as he just signed a new deal)
Michael Carrick (unrealistic as we don't have much cover in this position)
    Anderson
    Nani
    Javier Hernández

    Loan:

    Tom Lawrence
    James Wilson
    Will Keane
    Nick Powell

    Haven't a clue about:

    Guillermo Varela
    Marnick Vermijl

I'm torn on Wilfried Zaha and Jesse Lingard. With the former featuring up front this pre-season and the latter deployed at wing-back it's hard to see either of them getting much game time in their preferred positions, especially so if we're bringing in a couple more players.

The Portuguese teams make massive profits from 3rd party ownership, decreasing the risk in buying players, Sporting greedy looking for more when they only own 25% of the player

Because the voices tell me not to – I am writing this in Verdana 10 so it should be coming out the same as typing directly onto explorer?

A lot easier to “disguise” if I’m banging away in Outlook – not much reason for me to be using Notepad but then again not much reason for me to spend my day on here either except that I’m bored

Apologies all if my fonts are coming through in some sort of annoying way. I thought it was just my opinions that pissed people off.

Last night Van Gaal referred to Valencia as a defender.

No place for Valencia as an out and out winger anymore.

Thought defence still looked very dodgy – but it maybe that the midfield is still too porous.

Did anybody else think LVG looked like an embarrassed school kid when Felani scored? Reckon the deal is done there. Already starting to regret it.

Yep I thought he looked a bit sheepish too, though maybe we are reading too much into it:)

Just after Keane came on last night, a ball was played through that he missed, he then had to make a last ditch overstretching effort to clear the ball, these are the type of situations he gets into that land him on the physio bench for 6 games.

or like the time he burst out of defence past a couple of players impressively, but then had to go and try and go past a third one and overstretched himself...played v well last night tho..

Blackett I was impressed with..James less so
