I'm passed the initial 18 months on my contract with Eircom.

Is it enough just to order the switch with Vodaphone, or do I have to give notice to Eircom?

    Vodafone handle it

    Vodafone handle it
So, no 30 day notice once the initial 18 months are up?

You'll have to notify Eircom in writing, when they reply set a date with Vodafone, they will make the application to switch.

Just let Vodafone handle it or you could be left offline for a spell.
Customer of mine made the mistake of contacting Eircom first. Ended up offline for nearly 3 weeks.
The worst that will happen with Eircom is an extra months line rental.

    Look at this thread.

And I've still no broadband today as since I placed an order in June.

    What a story!

Might stay with Eircom if I can get 'broadband only' for €40.

I'm also worried about an old Macbook that had problems with IPv6. Eircom were very good at sorting out the issue, so there's a risk Vodaphone might not be able.
