can't open file

I am trying to send a file attachment by email to a few people they get te email but cant open the file I am sending it from a windows xp I have sent it to another email address I use andI opened it on our laptop WINDOWS 7 no problem. Is it something i am doing or is the problem at the other end.

Whats the extension of the file you are tying to open?

Hi I am sending the file to someone else by ext do you mean doc I am not great on computers

You mean .doc ? If so they`ll need Microsoft word to open it or a free alternative such as this http://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/download/details.aspx?id=4
