My uncle was nice enough to drop of his laptop to me what won't work .. as he tells me.

It's a Sony vaio pretty new mobel.

He said it wasn't dropped but i've no way of knowing.

I have it plugged in and when I press the power button is starts.. I see the Sony vaio logo on the screen and then nothing happens.

I've tried to press ESC / DEL / F2/F8/F12 to get into bios but nothing seems to work...

I popped open the ram / hard drive flaps on the back see if anything was lose and it looked ok.

Does anything have any ideas of other things I could do to try get it working ?

    thanks.

Change the RAM or if 2 sticks already exist, try each one individually.

Could be a dead hard drive also, I'd be checking that first

Take out the hard disk, it will boot to BIOS without it.

small update on this that I can't really understand.

I took the ram out.. checked it.. and it looked fine..

I put in back in.. started the laptop up and it seemed to work..

I got a screen saying windows was not shut down correctly and I had some options. I selected to continue to windows 8 ( and not restart )

And they it just went to that black screen again..

I restarted the laptop.. and again right back to a blank screen.

    So i'm not sure now.

Remove ram and reseat. Try powering on with a windows 8 disk in and see if you can get the recovery option going.

Try the ram one stick at a time .Reseat means to make sure the ram is fixed is place

properly .It looks to me that you have a either faulty ram or just a bad connection .

    there's only one it//

I found a setting to "refresh" windows 8.. this is my 1st time ever using win 8

It's trying the refresh.. said it would keep the files.

so it's on 20% now.. hope it works

Ok it's booting up and windows is coming on.. It looks like its working..

    But there's something wrong.

I am the admin of the laptop.. i've checked that.. but I can't install anything or even access the C drive. Keeps saying access denied

I've tried to change permissions but it's not letting..

I've read online about "taking ownership" but I cant see that anywhere.

it's like windows is blocking anything from happening... ( i officially hate Win 8 )

tried to take screen shots.. but when I open paint and pasted I got an error.. tired it again and it pasted ... then it wouldn't let me save as I had no permissions !! .. I am the admin.. i've double checked..

i'll try take a photo with my phone.
