    I was looking into mackeeper as it seemed like a good overall protection system; it especially appealed since I'm not familiar with mechanisms used to break osx security.

    Not good stuff on google about it though.

    Is there some system that can be bought as it's a user without much tech expertise...

    No AV is required at all on a Mac, just make sure it's fully up to date because Apple are generally on the ball for fixes / guards for rogues. Most malware for Macs are either adware or DNS changers but they're hasn't been a "new" Mac malware family in a good while.
