You can find out who people are quite easily if they post in certain sections/give away little bits of info.

Lets all close our accounts and come back with completely different names and try to guess each other's previous usernames.

I would say that this account is slightly different to my last one and I've tried not to give away too much information about myself. I've also posted a few white lies about myself to cover tracks a bit too.

    I've done this too :o

I'm a re-reg. I closed my previous account because of some psychotic person stalking me and doing crazy stuff with my posts out in the real world. I don't ever use the forums that I previously used all the time because I can't go through all the crazy stuff again
I've heard a few posters say the same thing! What the actual f#ck??? Some people have too much free time.

without going far in revealing your identity...like what??that sounds insane:o

as for OP...I suppose people just get pissed off/want to change name....though the people that re-reg under much the same name....seems pointless to me

Whatever happened to FemmeFatale? Maybe she's watching porn :pac:

Honestly, I think people are realizing how easy their identity is to find online.

I've seen people with 10k posts closing their accounts and reregistering with their old username using a number or extra letter as they can't register with their old username. Not much anonymity there.

Here since 2004 and did that

Partly was a rage thing as I got a ridiculous ban from a forum I had pushed to get set up. Clocked up a few deserved bans over the years but that ban was a joke

And partly was some loon was quoting all my posts across different forums

Took a break for a few months. I may well do it again :)

Most of the hardcore feminazis did the close-rereg there a few years ago. I think most have fallen by the wayside, but there are one or two stragglers who are pretty easy to spot.
I scratch my head why they bothered to be honest. I suppose it's part of the victim mentality they buy into.

They get fed up; they get a life (if they have been spending all day in front of a screen (apart from work)); they get sick of content; they want to start afresh (depending on what they are signed up to); they just don't have the time. . .So many reasons why accounts are closed.

I've noticed this is a common thing.
Often among posters who have racked up thousands of posts over years and really 'established' themselves in certain forums. They have 'friends', engage in daily chat, make smart and funny posts.
Then out of nowhere: CLOSED ACCOUNT.

I don't get it. Do they just burn out, get sick of spending so much time on a message board and decide to try out the real world for a while? Or is it a privacy issue, do they feel they have 'revealed too much'?

I've been around here for quite a while. Sometimes I disappear for weeks because life gets busy, other times I post and browse and thank posts far too frequently than probably is normal....but I've never considered closing my account. I like having a boards identity that no-one in the real world knows about (I think...). I like expressing my opinions on stuff and sometimes having my mind changed. I like looking over posts that I wrote sometimes, in a sense they've sort of chronicled the adventures I've had over the last few years.

So what's up with it? Do they just all come back and re-reg? Or do they just disappear into the ether?

I used to bea diff account before lou.m. I closed it for two reasons... 1. there was the rather creepy anomaly of another poster who logged in and found they were accidentally posting under my username and notified themselves as such in the posts. They did not say anything bad but it was really weird. It happened way way back and I did not notice for ages. I kept forgetting the password also for that account.

I prob will close it sometime...you guys know too much. -_- I have been using this one for too long now.

Another reason might be that You would like to use a new really cute username.

If someone bothered a user also is another reason.

    noooooooooooooo

    You are best one.

Quite frankly you are one of the more sane ones! Saner than me anyhow!

I closed my old account as I got tired of Politicians PMing me asking for advice on how to run the world, lads asking for tips on how to succeed with women and Alex Ferguson had me plagued with long winded PMs regarding team choices. I could just about handle all that, but then that Uma Thurman one started stalking me looking for sex. That was the last straw.

I've just thought of a cracking new name. I'm salivating as I type.

Plus I need to preserve my secret identity and get back to running the country.

Maybe I've said too much already :o

it seems a rather pointless activity, if some one is bothering you or you've revealed to much of your identity, anybody that is actually a stalker is going to cop who you are very quickly if you keep posting about exactly the same stuff. Also if you want to.keep changing your username would you not subscribe if you want new usernames and clearly like the site.

If any one has ever quoted a post of yours under your old username then it won't change when you change your username and can be seen if someone reads through that thread.

Closing accounts is the only surefire way to do it, although it's a good point about posting to the same one or two forums and same posting style etc.

I can see the attraction. Sometimes I wish there was a button to completely wipe my entire online presence. It makes me uncomfortable that I've been posting (crap ) on various web pages since I was 14.

And it's there ... Forever... Haunting me...

Deleted Mine a year ago, I try not to post on boards to much these days.

I expect quite a few of these "closed accounts" to pop up over the next few weeks.

Soon enough (Many) people are going to look back at their posting history and realise that they vehemently argued for weeks to allow Garth Brooks concerts to happen. I think the shame will eventually get to them and they will whisper off into the night :D

I think a lot of people give away tonnes of information online. Some are fine with it but I guess others may realise they've built up a 'profile' of themselves e.g. female, teacher, age 30+, lives in Dublin, went to DCU etc and want to take a step back for one reason or another.

Obviously if you were to forensically examine every post of a given user you could do the above but I think people learn to be a bit more discerning over time and no doubt many, if not most of those closed accounts are still here under a new name.

I was actually wondering about something the other day, I know many people use their phones for photo's these days and many phones are GPS equipped.

Does anybody know if the Boards attachment upload facility strips the geotagging metadata from photofiles? (I know sites like facebook etc do but what about Boards?).

If it doesn't then I think a lot of people are even more identifiable than they realise.

What would said harrassers/stalkers do with a person's real identity?

Any warning stories to be told?

I mean, I'd say if you looked through my posts, you'd find a lot of information about me....but what does anybody want to do about it?

Just had a bit of a snoop around some threads using http://regex.info/exif.cgi and as it turns out Boards.ie does not strip geotagging metadata out of attachments.

For those of you not familiar with geotagging it means that anybody who knows their way around the interweb will be able to see exactly where a photo was taken using the hidden data in the file (provided you've used a device that uses geotagging, most phones these days will).

Perhaps something worth keeping in mind when posting pictures of your back garden, your lovely classic in your workshop, new puppies etc. etc. etc.

It's not too far from just telling people exactly where you live and giving them directions to your house

Wouldn't matter really if I closed my account, nobody would notice :(

"Didn't there used to be that guy called.......Fuggie656?"

    "No?"

    "Huh, my mistake."
