Those soldiers that lost their lives today and were injured were from the Golani brigade those guys are elite troops some of the units are spec ops. Seven of them rolled into an ambush their apc was taken out and then they were machine gunned. nightmare. and soon after that happened the Israelis shelled the neighbourhood of Shejaiya in response. I watched Bibis speech a little while ago totally directed toward an Israeli audience what I took it from was that he is preparing them for a lengthy operation and to expect more casualties . I'm not sure when this is going to end but before it does more people on both sides are going to lose their lives a lot more.
Indeed the Israeli's have to reject any ceasefires to push on now and achieve something significant to claim their own propaganda victory,it wont be easy for them now though particularly with Kerry coming to the region soon. It's slightly ironic and unfortunate for everyone since the analysis of their original targets of destroying the tunnels was that it was probably an attempt to set a limited and easily achievable objective before a ceasefire.

Everyone knows that after all the killing is done the talking will begin.
It's a pity they couldn't just talk this thing out without the deaths.

Why are the UN and the US not demanding an end to the bloodshed by both sides?

ISRAEL ARE THE SCUM OF THE ****ING EARTH, THE SHOULD BE ELIMINATED AND THE WHOLE TERRITORY SHOULD BECOME A COUNTRY OF PALESTINE

2 wrongs do not make a right. I am no fan of Zionism, and the actions of the state of Israel, but collective punishment is wrong regardless.

What needs to happen is either 2 states (becoming more and more unlikely each passing day, and may already be impossible), or a single state that respects the rights of both Palestinians and Israeli's.

Well the soviets then went on to occupy eastern Europe, any attempts at reform such as Prague spring were crushed with force.

Whats that have to do with the fact of 20 Million soviet dead? Why should those people be ignored? They are not to blame for the later actions of a maniac like Stalin. Sorry, but ignore them to try and score a cheap political point is nasty, and a simple example of someone ignoring facts, when it doesn't suit them.

Your point is wholly irrelevant to the point I was making, and I assume you know what I was talking about.

Why are the UN and the US not demanding an end to the bloodshed by both sides?

The US vetoes every single UN resolution that's critical of the Israelis West Bank colonisation project.
The US vetoes every single UN resolution supportive of Palestinian human rights or statehood.
The US vetoes every single UN resolution calling for a restraint of Israel's brutality.

A solution will not come from the US or UN. That's why civil society is engaging in boycotting, divestment and sanctioning of Israeli goods and institutions that profit from the occupation.

I think the Israeli plan may well be to try and reoccupy Gaza or parts of it. not indefinitely but for a number of months I'm not sure either side is genuinely interested in a ceasefire at the moment. Hamas and the Palestinians are really being smashed hard this seems different this time around. The Israelis are usually ruthless but If they try reoccupy Gaza that's bad news really bad news . for everyone . reckon Kerry can achieve anything?..do you think it's just about the tunnels..

True I just hoped both sides would have used the oppertunity to stop this round of violence.

When you're dealing with ideologically driven evil (speaking about both Hamas and the IDF here) that doesn't come easily.

Gaza and the Palestinians are really being pounded. Hamas missiles still going into Israel who have warned journalists they aren't safe and their safety can not be guaranteed. apparently the Israeli intelligence minister gave an interview to a tv channel saying the plan maybe to occupy Gaza for seven months so that they can dismantle Hamas. If that's the plan it's about to get a whole lot worse for all concerned.
    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-07-20/over-50-killed-gaza-israel-shelling-fiercest-1967-war
they will never dismantle hamas, tried and failed, slaughter left right and centre and make out to their home grown delusianel extremists that they have is probably what will happen.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

He's worth much more to them alive and well than harmed or dead.

The last time they released an Israeli soldier they got 1000 of their own released in return.

Gaza is a pretty small place, i always wonder where they keep these captured soldiers. Maybe in some kind of Fritzel dungeon.

he can take solace in that as he takes his beating that he is probably getting now. after they get a few pics of him down a hole he goes for a while. if the Israelis are willing to trade for him then I think he will be ok might take a while but he will make it out. bad buzz for him though.

Looking like a bluff from Hamas, maybe?

    Israel News Feed ‏@IsraelHatzolah 47s

Israeli defence reporters saying IDF denies Hamas claim that a soldier was captured. Name used belongs to 1 of soldiers killed. CBC

refering, I think to one of the 13 killed earlier

I think originally the tunnels were chosen as the objective because they should have been easy to secure and neutralise, not because they were necessarily important but in these conflicts it can be hard to have firm objectives to claim victory with and the tunnels were a good opportunity to take and then accept a ceasefire. All speculation of course.

Hamas have shown doucments which they alledge are the soldiers,

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BtA7hHQCYAAbqwo.jpg,

but why would they not take a pic of him. Unless moving him, and they just took his docs and will parade him at later stage

They might not want to show him if he was beaten during the capture, the situation could quickly backfire on them
