I'm in as well. Maybe a bar code on the top if my helmet can be scanned at each set of red lights, then scanned again when you move off at a green

The government are not going to tax cycling. Stop wasting your simpleton brain cells on something that is not going to happen.

Don't be a silly billy that's overkill you'd already have an RFID chip!

EDIT Why would you want to scan at red lights and again as you move off?

Keep the blinkers on, and we'll see what happens when the finance minister is looking to balance the books :)The original thought was to license/tax the cyclist but you convinced me otherwise, so per cycle it is, after all if you can afford several bikes, like if someone can afford several cars you can afford to pay per bike :) So that would be an even bigger revenue stream, running it costs very little extra if we went with the motor tax system and used the same computers and numbering system. The little Johnny on his bike playing might need some leeway building into the system but as a whole it's doable

A Tax on Bullsh*t posts which have no bearing in reality, €1 for each post added to your phone bill and make it retrospective, which means we should have the national debt paid off soon!

I dunno another tax. Traffic lights tax. Each scan you pay a euro. Sounds as workable as your other suggestions anyway. Could also consider a puncture tax as well. Jayney this is ripe for the taking.

Silly Billy, then that would be like Tenzorbully's suggestion of taxing cyclists off the road, I thought you might be hinting at integrating cameras to spot RLJ's

No, I think it's just more to do with not wanting to have the same debate every two months...

Well, you've already demonstrate a lack of grasp when it comes to equitable taxation so there's no reason why you'd know about materiality - you think in trying to manage €200 billion in debt and a €40 billion budget, the Finance Minister is looking at something that would bring in, at best, a snot of €2 million........?..

So how will they know I've five bikes - is somebody going to come out and check? And how will cross-border purchases be tracked? CRC think your idea to register bikes bought in the Republic is brilliant, btw.

    Right.
    Ban Cyclists outside cities.
    Ban motorists inside cities.
Anyone who can't cycle gets a disability pass.
    All problems solved.
    Have a nice day.

    Sure......

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en

Delivery can be a bit slow......but they've huge shop just off the motorway this side of Belfast - about 90 mins from the M50

Cyclists are a profoundly delinquent class of road user. The loutish behaviour is bad enough, but this is an accompanied by a sickening sanctimonious sense of entitlement that would put the 1950s Catholic church in the ha'penny place. This can be seen from the numerous apologists on this thread "We are saving the planet, how dare you propose we follow laws/ have training/ have ID on our vehicles", laws are not for important people like us".

I'd love to see one post on this thread that says any of that.....

.....ah, you have to look closely.

The most ridiculous aspect of your suggestion is that taxation, registration etc of bikes will never happen......so really, people calling for it are just shouting at the wind......but if it keeps them happy sure let them carry on.

Cross border checks, presumably it would work along similar lines to cars registered in other countries, first few times you'd likely be ignored but ride an unregistered bike too long then you get nicked.

Get nicked - for failing to pay a nominal tax? By whom would one get nicked?

The RSA statistics show 1,025,514 penalty points given to 617,928 drivers in January 2014.
If you can post here the number of cycling offences and number of cyclists for that month (or any period) then we can compare.

So if it's just shouting in the wind why are you arguing?

Customs and Excise, GS or revenue, whichever one would deal with unlicensed vehicles, penalty dunno, maybe 10x what you owe or scapping of the bike, told you that the detail would be worked out by some junior lackey probably in enviroment dept.

Never mind Ron, I'm sure you'll do better in front of an open goal next World Cup semi

    The facts are simple.

Motorists are going to face increasing costs and decreasing privilege and access in this country.

The opposite is true for cyclists.
Economic incentives for cycling will increase and their privilege and access is going to increase.

There will be many more roads shut off from cars and restricted to cyclists and buses. Parking spaces will be culled. Cycling facilities will increase.

    Fuel tax will increase.

Get with the programme or get left behind in a jam.

Good idea, I mean if C&E and AGS are up on the border unlicensed bikes should take priority over laundered fuel, smuggled counterfeit alcohol and clenbuterol.......because they're just noddy issues compared to a cyclist not paying his euro a week......

.......really? How are you not Minister for Finance, or at least Chairman of the Revenue?
