Does anyone know where we can buy explosive effects for a play? Something small that will give a flash and a bit of a bang.

yeppydeppy, is there a production team in place for this play? Oftentimes items like this would be under the remit of the lighting director/operative or if you are using a venue that has an in- house tech crew then they would be best placed to ask.

It's an amateur production in a small theatre. The director has bought them before but he's not sure where.

Amateur or not, pyro fx should be done by a professional. I'm sure the small theatre would prefer that for insurance purposes too.

Any pyro must be done by a professional.
