Memory works in powers of 2, GB are really 1024Mb which are each 1024kb which are 1024 bytes each so a gb is 1.07x10^9.

We as humans prefer round numbers so we work in 1000s so we think a 1GB = 1000MB which are 1000kB which are 1000B which would be 1.00x10^9 so there is a difference.

So if you have been given/sold 500GB in human terms that is 500x10^9 bytes but in computer terms divide 500x10^9 by the 1.07x10^9 and you come out with the magic number of 465Gb on your computer screen.

    Hope this helps
