Saw some road warrior dickheads lastnight in Galway (centre). Audi A4 moved off from the kerb either without checking mirrors or didn't see the cyclist in all dark clothes with no lights. In fairness, the A4 was moving off quite slowly but the cyclist decided (rather than brake) to swoop around and cut in infront of him, forcing him to brake. He wasn't moving at any speed either, this was in Galway city centre, 15-20km/h max

Continuing on, car passes cyclist further up the road, cyclist keeps gesticulating towards the car, then he speeds up comes along side the car and starts banging on the windows/side of it. A4 reacts by swerving towards cyclist...

Tbh by that stage I don't blame the A4 driver, I doubt anyone would do anything different in the same situation. Yes, the initial issue was caused by the A4, but a small bit of cop on from the cyclist in how he handled it and all of that could have been avoided.

From reading on alfaowner He's having fun doing the timing belt on two alfa v6s......something like 150 bolts have to come off to do the timing and auxiliary belt on the busso. An awkward engine to do as it was never intended to be transversely mounted. Likewise the oil filter on them. You've to take of the wheel, the wheel guard and go in from the side. Or go from the bottom but disconnect the power steering pipes. Lovely engine to have in a car but a pain to work on.

Engine hoist in place, rope wrapped around every available part of the engine, just about to start undoing the mounts.....and rain

But closed bonnet without oil cap on... drove on motorway for 2 hours.... messy engine bay but still over 3/4 oil in engine !

Just put diesel in car... went in paid ... came back out and seen I left the filler cap off.

    Genius alert !

Question, would you expect a dealer who primarily deals with (newish) imports to import a 10 or 11 year old car for a customer?

If I were the dealer I'd want to be making as much profit on it as a newer import.

Why would you do that? Would you not just bring it in yourself?

No, can't be bothered with the hassle. If that was the case I'd just settle for something here.

What car is it you're looking for (I think it's a golf). Join one of the owners forums and get a well minded one of one of the regulars? I'd rather bring in a well minded enthusiasts one from the uk than one owned by some person in ireland who thought oil was for the chip pan. It's not a major hassle. You find the car, agree on the price and bring it back and vrt it.

Assuming you'd be buying in the UK there's very little haste.
You just fly over, drive home and pay your VRT.

There's a crowd in Baldoyle that imports cars. Just tell them what you want. Can't remember the name unfortunately...

No hassle and you'd save yourself a fair amount in fees I'd imagine.

When I went looking for a golf I couldn't believe how bad it's gotten everything I looked at was wrecked. It's getting harder to get clean second hand cars. Out of the cars I went to see a lot were crashed and badly repaired I don't mind something that was crashed provided it was minor enough and repaired properly. Literally a few hours before I spotted the car I bought up for sale I was going to give up the search and just use the octavia which wasn't a bad car either.

Anyway I spotted this golf 5 miles away from where I live I was straight over to see it and bought it there and then. It wasn't up two hours at that stage. I still can't believe the condition it's in all things considered plastic still on the rear interior light from the factory. Granted I paid for the privilege of it being so clean but I didn't mind that. But the one thing I learned is you have to be quick if you spot something you like literally drop everything and go if you don't it will be sold.

Hmm, well I've another 2 months (until September) before I have to have bought by. I'll wait a while longer and see if anything nice comes up around here, if not, I'll look further afield.

Does it have to be a Golf????

Keep an eye on the likes of the Bangernomics thread on here - and see if anything looks promising.

For example Johnboy 26 posted this in the bangernomics thread

I know its petrol (possibly a no no for you) and its in Cork.... but still might be worth considering (1.6 Ford Focus 2002 100 k miles asking 1,650 euros - NCT until March 15)
