No more smoking on the Arts Block ramp

Not a smoker myself, but feels a little bit like the end of an era...

(Cue descent of thread into arguments about passive smoking within three responses...)
The HSE Environmental Health Service has formally notified the College that smoking in the Arts Building walkway contravenes the Public Health (Tobacco) Acts 2002-2004. Signage to this effect is being installed. This notification came about on foot of complaints about smoking in the Arts Block walkway and the subsequent observation of contraventions. The Environmental Health Officer warns in his letter that ‘Any person who contravenes this provision ….shall be liable on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding €4000’, so it is important that all students and staff respect the legislation by refraining from smoking in the walkway. The same rule applies to Front Gate and the Science Gallery archway and other similar locations.

I am taking this opportunity to bring to your attention the College’s Smoking Policy which was put in place by the Board in 2004. See: http://www.tcd.ie/collegehealth/assets/documents/Smoking/TCD%20smoking%20policy%202011.pdf

Thank you to all who abide by College’s policy which states, inter alia, that smoking is prohibited “in enclosed entrances, porticos or tunnels and within a distance of 4m from entrance doors, opening windows and entrances to enclosed areas, tunnels or porticos”. The purpose of this provision is to ensure that our fellow students and staff are not exposed to second-hand smoke in their places of work and study due to smoke seeping in through doors and windows, even when closed. This issue was raised by many respondents in the survey conducted as part of the Tobacco Free Trinity initiative. Your consideration and respect for the right of others in the College community not to breathe second hand smoke is appreciated.

But perhaps this only applies to the walkway past the Douglas Hyde?

4m from the tunnel would be most of the way down the ramp. I'd be incredibly surprised if this is consistently policed though, especially outside the tunnel itself.

Don't smoke myself and have no problem with people smoking in open/well-ventilated spaces, but having to walk through clouds of smoke to get in/out of a building or even campus isn't fair on anyone (smokers and non-smokers alike).

Sure, they could erect a shelter for smokers to use during bad weather, but people shouldn't get annoyed over walking a few extra metres

The smokers used to drop their cigarette butts on the ground, even if there were bins close by - definitely a group we don't need around the Arts or any other building! Seems a bit cleaner now.
