I have an English Setter bitch who is nearly a year old. I'm throwing out a dummy and a tennis ball in front of her but she is paying no attention to them. She looks at them but just doesn't pick them up. I was just looking for tips on how to get her retrieving.

Leave her sniff it in your hand, try and make it playful, hold the dummy in your hand and gee her up a bit, wave it from side to side etc. start your throws short and have her retrieve from there.

I have just had the same thing with my ESS, not interest in balls, sticks or any toy. The minute I produced the dummy, he was bang on it. I had mine wrapped in a rabbit skin too.

setters are not natural retrievers, although i'v seen some that will,i had a red setter one time that would retrieve from water but would ignore the same bird if it fell on land.you'll be very lucky if your dog ever retrieves if it didn't do it from the off.
