RTE and their stretch-vision

    RTE 1 are currently screening the 1994 bastardised colour version of The Longest Day which was of course made in B&W but also they are screening a 4:3 pan and scan print which is stretched across the 16:9 ratio of my screen. As it ends (as I type) the credits are rolling in "ultra" widescreen it was intended to shown in. This is sadly all too frequent a state of affairs by the national broadcaster, it is so hard to play out 4:3 material in the correct ratio?

    Agreed. Why they can't display 4:3 material in the pillarbox format like Channel 4 HD does is puzzling. It reeks of amateurism.

    Another issue is with both RTE 1 & 2 now outputting in 1080i, some TV's (the older Sonys for example) can't be put in 4:3 mode to compensate for 'stretchyvision'. It's only available with an SD broadcast.

    You know what I totally agree that RTÉ should be broadcasting it in correct aspect ratio but you know as well as I do that probably more people who don't under stand it would be giving out why RTÉ is only using half the screen - damned if they do, damned if they don't.
