Last evening my newly installed Windows 8.1 started itself automatically on my desktop computer.

When I turn on the monitor, nothing was visible on the screen.

This morning, it was still running and the screen was still blank.

I presume this is some kind of automatic defrag or maintenance of some kind.

    But, what?

    Do I need it?

If not, how do I turn it off?

    Thanks.

    D.

ps. There are four external USB hard drives also connected to this machine. They were running also.

It wasn't shut down properly, it was just sleeping :)

It was most likely in sleep mode instead of been fully turned off or you have fast boot mode enabled
You can check this by moving your mouse or pressing a key on your keyboard

Windows 8 has new sleep mode and a fast boot mode
The fast boot mode does not fully power and loads windows 8 very quickly

You can change this in power settings

If you have a dual boot system 2 different operating systems it's best to disable fast boot mode

How do you know it's 8.1 if you cannot see anything on the monitor

    Seems it's the Defragmentation settings.

Computer defrags all the drives once a week, during the night.
