Barefield are a great example of a club getting too big too quick, they had an amazing team in the mid-90s that in truth was as good as many inter-county teams, not only had they Seanie, Ollie & Jamesey in key places, they had Christy O'Connor in goal, Ciaran O'Neil & Lorcan Hassett in the forwards not to mention the Hoey brothers, the problem was they were concentrating on the players in the main team and almost forgetting about those coming through. Then Barefield won the County Football as an emagulation with Eire Óg, this seemed to have been an affront to some people in Barefield and they seemed hell bent on making sure they won a football championship on their own.

Now, throw in the fact that they had an ideal pitch right in the centre of their main population, next to a social centre but decided that they should have a complex rather than a pitch so they moved, they got great money for their old pitch but they paid a fortune for their current location as well.

All in all a very badly run club in my opinion

DB success was based around exceptional hurlers in a small enough population based. A bit like Sarsfields in Galway, when that surge in talent passes then its hard to replace. The new centre is exceptional, but as you say in the wrong place.

Shane O' Donnell already out with a hamstring tear and Cathal O' Connell now joins him on the sidelines with the same injury, damage done yesterday.

Two big losses from the forward line,

Tots will be a big loss, but don't ye have just hundreds of these little, nippy, skilful forwards coming through?

Ye're strong favourites for a reason, and we're missing David Reidy with a broken collarbone, and presumably Ronan and Cian Lynch, as well as Barry Nash and Andrew La Touche Cosgrave will all be missing due to the Leaving Cert starting that day. Ciarán will have our lads fired up, be interesting to see how it goes.

What clubs are Donal Moloney and Gerry O'Connor from, does anyone know?

There's a comma after the 's' in Champions, i.e. Clare, who were playing in the league semi final. Think you read it wrong.

gerry o connor is involved with eire og in ennis but i am not sure about moloney, they both live in ennis but i think donal moloney works out side the county and is not as involved with the club scene at the moment but he was involved with them in the past as far as i know

donal moloney is originally from scarrif , gerry o connor is from killanaena (near the galway border) , o connors involvement with eire og stands out though, i dont think i have ever seen so many players from that club involved in county set ups at the same time at any age group

i think they came up with the idea initially of drafting in paul kinnerk to there under age setup , a lot of people regard him as one of the main reasons behind clare's success last year , he was working in shannon at the time around 2010 or there abouts , some achievement on his part to put that much effort into a county set up while concentrating on his own inter county football career

didnt get to limerick last night due to work but good and all the end result was , the cards were very much stacked against limerick from the word go

they were missing several key players from the word go some due to injury others due to th leaving cert ( crazy idea to play the fixture this week in my opinion) although fair play to cian lynch who had sat his english paper a few hours earlier, asking shane dowling to play 3 days after a tough game against tipp did no favours for them either

the scoreline might have been a bit flattering in the end, limerick were still only 5 points back with 6 or 7 mins to go keith hogan having to make one or two key saves in the process, cunninghams goal sealed it but his season looks ominous when picking up an injury in the build up for peter duggans goal a few minuets later

fingers crossed it wont be as bad as first taught aaron would be a key member of both senior and 21s panels and had broke through to the senior side last year before picking up 2 separate injuries to end his season ,
he goes for a scan in limerick today to find out the extent of the damage

clare's next game in this grade will be at home against tipperary in 5 weeks time , a win will set up a final date with either cork (at a neutral venue) or waterford ( at cusack park) but tipp will have plenty to say first before we start thinking about that yet

Irrespective of who Clare play if they beat Tipp the final will be in Ennis as in 2008 Clare played Cork in Cork.

sound for that , i didnt think it would go back that far to award home advantage for a reverse fixture

Its just as well it does as home games will make the task easier id say

i still think that waterford team will be very hard to beat regardless of where its on ( should both teams get to the final that is ) they were no push overs last year and they looked good against cork in the seniors two weeks ago

limerick wont be too far behind clare really, the set up in places like doon at the moment looks similar to that pf what has happened here in places like cratloe and clonlara in the last few years at underage

also i would be very interested to see how this clare team do in this grade next year without key senior players like tony kelly and colm galvin

I see Davy did not bring Liam with him to Kilkenny. I'd say he was afraid Liam would get home sick and never go back down there. Ah well I suppose we will just have to go to Croker and bring him home if that's the way ye want it.

Ye better win it this year. After last nights effort ye won't be winning it much on the near future

Although I just saw Doon got beaten 4-10 to 0-00 by NaP at U-14 level.....

Limerick have a serious minor team at the moment, Clare have had a great crop in the last few years, but we had a good group over the past couple of years too who under-performed. It takes more than good players, you have to have the management too.

the footballers are in action on saterday night at home to waterford , and while waterford will put it up to us, anything other then a home win would be a huge step backwards from what work was done over the league

sense the 1 point defeat to tipperary at croker last April colm collins and the backroom staff have been keeping the cards close to the chest .

a number of low key challenge matches were played in the build up to tomorrow, first up was what i am led to believe , a comfortable win over fermanagh in mid may, that was followed by a training camp in cavan the following weekend where they played a behind closed doors game against cavan on the sunday 25 of may ( cavan themselves played a breffni all-stars game the day before)

then on the following wednesday night in ennis (4 days after galway hammered london in ruislip in the connacht championship ) it finished clare 1-20 galway 3-16 , a late goal sealed it for the visitors in what was said to have been a cracking match,

a win tomorow night will set up a home tie against kerry in 3 weeks time where the inevitable will most likely take place, however it would be a good test for us to see excatley how much progress we have made over the year should we win tomorrow night a moral victory would be claimed against kerry should we keep it within 7

as far as team news is concerned martin "ogie" murphy , cathal o connor out injured while joe hayes comes back in for peirce deloughrey in goals, there are also 5 championship debutantes all of whome played vital roles through the league

    1. Joe Hayes
    2. Dean Ryan
    3. Kevin Hartnett
    4. Martin McMahon
    5. Shane Hickey
    6. Gordan Kelly
    7. Ciaran Russell
    8. Gary Brennan (Captain )
    9. Jamie Malone
    10. Shane Mcgrath
    11. Enda Coughlan
    12. Sean Collins
    13. Martin O' Leary
    14. David Tubridy
    15. Podge Collins

    clare 2-08 waterford 2-08

not the result that was expcected today but credit waterford for battling right to the very end , a paul white point just at the final whistle means a fixture headache next weekend as the hurlers are due to take on cork/waterford in the hurling on sunday ,so we will be without the two collins brothers , i would expect the game to be fixed for next saterday in dungarvin

the footballers main objective for 2014 has already been completed but i am sure colm collins men would have expected them to pick up one or two wins before a championship exit

    From RTE.ie
A replay will be required in Fraher Field next Saturday after a topsy-turvy matched finished level.

Bit of a fixture nightmare alright, you'd imagine the Collins won't be allowed play Saturday evening, I'd say the losers of next week will be out the following week as well.

Actually, is Waterford beat Cork tomorrow I hope they put on a double header the following week, assuming Waterford are ok with giving up home field advantage of course.

there is no way in the world they should play, the footballers job is done for 2014 in my opinion ,the winners play kerry sunday week and there is nothing to be gaind for either side realy in that one , and most people back here in west clare would agree with me , we would need the 2 lads on sunday in thurles or limerick

it would be great , but it would never happen, when clare went down to thurles last march to play a double header against tipperary they put the football on second to presevre the pitch, if the same was to happen next sunday the football game wouldnt start until after 6 o clock, .....i doubt many people would be willing to stay until half 7 / 8 o clock on a sunday night for it

There could be quite the difference in regards to the qualifiers draw by winning the first round, still, nice to win a match, we aren't going to get better by playing division 4 teams.

By the way, I agree, the lads shouldn't be risked but if 1 of them aren't going to figure on the Sunday they should be allowed play.

Surely Sean Collins should be allowed to play for footballers on Saturday considering he barely featured for hurlers over last 12 months?

Apparently he has been flying in training and challenge games. He could well feature somewhere in Davys plans. He was injured last year so it was easy forget about him.

infairness to sean he was a first choice starter before he got injured last year. and he has featured quiet a bit coming off the bench through out the league, he is a diffrent player to his brother but still a very useful asset to have

i agree if davy is not going to use him he should tell colm to play him saterday , but thats never going to happen

listen it gives someone else a chance the next day and yeah it would be great to have a crack at kerry , but throwing away a 5 point lead like that yesterday is almost unforgivable , a massive improvement is needed for next saterday night with or without the collins's

Should there have been a band and parade before the football game yesterday similar to what has been there before the hurling games for the past few weeks? It's a championship game but yesterday there wasn't even music on the tannoy beforehand and the national anthem was just about played!

thinking back to bigger games in the past against the likes of cork and kerry i could never remember a band before the start of a munster football match, there was none last year either against cork , id say you would have to go back to the early 90s for something like that . . . . .i think?

So only a few more sleeps until we invade Thurles again! Going to be another battle, I'm worried the 2 games they played will have thought them a lot.

It's not an advantage having to play 7 days before facing the banner - ye're going to win again!

Football comes first for Sean Collins this weekend

    12 June 2014

Sean Collins is set to line out for the Clare footballers in their Munster championship quarter-final replay against Waterford in Dungarvan on Saturday.

He is also expected to be on the bench for the Clare hurlers when they open their All-Ireland defence against Cork the following day. However, his brother and fellow dual star Podge will be focusing solely on hurling this weekend after featuring for the footballers in their drawn encounter with Waterford last Saturday evening.

Clare football manager Colm Collins had appeared resigned to being without both of his sons for the Fraher Field replay when questioned on the matter after last weekend's game in Ennis.

"If they are playing hurling on Sunday, it is unlikely they will be there on Saturday in Dungarvan," he said.

Team news: Clare make two changes for replay

    12 June 2014

Clare have made two changes in personnel for the Munster SFC quarter-final replay against Waterford this Saturday.

As expected, Shane Brennan returns for the unavailable Podge Collins who will be on duty for the hurlers for their Munster SHC semi-final against Cork.

The other change is also in attack where Barry Hartnett takes over for Jamie Malone.

Clare (SFC v Waterford): Joe Hayes; Dean Ryan, Kevin Harnett, Martin McMahon; Shane Hickey, Gordon Kelly, Ciaran Russell; Gary Brennan, Shane McGrath; Sean Collins, Enda Coughlan, Barry Hartnett; Martin O'Leary, Shane Brennan, David Tubridy.

What's the word on the street with regard to the hurling?

Podge fit? Who's going to start inside? Cathal McInerney? Darach Honan? Someone else?

Podge is good to go I think, talk of peter Duggan starting inside. A lot of speculation at this point though so don't take it as gospel .
