Haha of course :) thats who I couldnt think of in the forwards.. he'l hopefully be corner-back though!!

If Barrett is fit then I'd play him half forward. He's got frightening pace for any defence to deal with.

This game is actually going to tell us a lot about Mayo. Are they as hungry as they were for the past 2-3 seasons under Horan? Are they as good as last season or have they improved? The league was up and down, can we perform as needed and as expected in the Championship.

As for Roscommon, has their good Division 3 campaign been a true reflection of them and have they actually improved and can they trouble Mayo at all?

I really really think that Mayo's price of 1/5 is very much inflated. 1/5 indicates that the bookie thinks Mayo have an 83% chance of winning this game.. I for one think its going to be tough, I know I and many thought the same going to Salthill last year but something is telling me that this is going to be a battle.

Our recent trips to Hype Park in 2011 (the 2 point win over Roscommon) and in 2012 (2 point win over Sligo) are adding to my unease over this game. I know thats probably ridiculous considering our team is different and arguably better now, but so is the competition.

Also just looking at some stats there. In the last 3 years here is each Connaught counties' record in the provincial championship:

    Mayo
    Played - 8, Won - 8.
    Scored - 14-126, Conceded - 3-77.
    Points Difference = +82.
Points Scored Per Game Average = 21.
Points Conceded Per Game Average = 10.75.

    Galway
    Played - 4, Won - 1, Lost - 3.
    Scored - 4-47, Conceded - 7-52.
    Points Difference = -14.
Points Scored Per Game Average = 14.75.
Points Conceded Per Game Average = 18.25.

    Roscommon
    Played - 5, Won - 2, Lost - 3.
    Scored - 5-63, Conceded - 4-56.
    Points Difference = +10
Points Scored Per Game Average = 15.6.
Points Conceded Per Game Average = 13.6.

    Sligo
    Played - 5, Won - 2, Lost - 3.
    Scored - 5-69, Conceded - 2-55.
    Points Difference = +23.
Points Scored Per Game Average = 16.8.
Points Conceded Per Game Average = 12.2.

    Leitrim
    Played - 7, Won - 3, Drew - 1, Lost 3.
    Scored - 6-78, Conceded - 12-76.
    Points Difference = -16.
Points Scored Per Game Average = 13.7.
Points Conceded Per Game Average = 16.

    London
    Played - 6, Won - 2, Drew - 1, Lost - 3.
    Scored - 8-58, Conceded - 6-82.
    Points Difference = -18.
Points Scored Per Game Average = 13.6.
Points Conceded Per Game Average = 16.6.

As expected Mayo rank best in wins, attacking and defending. Galway actually have the worst defensive record when you average it out on games played. Sligo have quite a good defensive record as do Roscommon.

If you were to compile a ranking from these stats I think it would be like this:
    1. Mayo
    2. Roscommon / Sligo
    3. Leitrim
    4. London
    5. Galway

Good article about Dillon, explains why he seemed to be "slow" last season, if they lad wasn't able to train it was incredible he was able to play at all!!

For all the talk about the riches we have in midfield, with injuries we only have the O'Shea brothers (how many counties would love thatproblem). The only problem is that it robs us of the versatility to try one of them in the half forwards. The other question is who provides cover in the middle if one of them gets a black card? Vaughan maybe?
Starting to look forward to Sunday now, think the poor old Rossies are in for a savage hiding, I'm expecting a Mayo tornado similar to salthill last year.

Barry Moran should be fit for Sunday.

I think that shows how highly important is he to Mayo team that Horan was willing to start him. Players playing in games without training is even done in soccer as Ledley King with Spurs and Paul McGrath with Villa would be two examples.

Our recent trips to Hype Park in 2011 (the 2 point win over Roscommon) and in 2012 (2 point win over Sligo) are adding to my unease over this game. I know thats probably ridiculous considering our team is different and arguably better now, but so is the competition.

Since those two games Mayo have gone on to reach back to back All Ireland finals so certainly better and more experienced however the players hasn't changed much as only those in bold will probably play no part on Sunday? and i think that shows how well of job this Mayo management have improved this panel of players.

    2012 v Sligo

David Clarke; Kevin Keane, Ger Cafferkey, Keith Higgins; Colm Boyle, Donal Vaughan, Lee Keegan; Barry Moran, Danny Geraghty; Kevin McLoughlin, Cillian O’Connor, Alan Dillon; Enda Varley, Andy Moran, Jason Doherty.

Subs: Aidan O’Shea for Geraghty; Michael Conroy for Varley, Alan Freeman for Doherty.

    2011 v Roscommon

Robert Hennelly; Keith Higgins, Alan Feeney, Tom Cunniffe; Richie Feeney, Donal Vaughan, Trevor Mortimer; Aidan O’Shea, Seamus O’Shea; Kevin McLoughlin, Alan Dillon, Andy Moran; Cillian O’Connor, Alan Freeman, Jason Doherty.

Subs: Ger Cafferkey for Alan Feeney, Enda Varley for Doherty, Ronan McGarrity for Seamus O’Shea, Peadar Gardiner for McLoughlin.

Going by your averages above its probably looking like a 6 to 8 point win for Mayo on Sunday?

Rossie mind games are starting
Many believe that an upset against Mayo can be achieved at the weekend, but Evans was having none of it when questioned by the Roscommon Herald.

"Ah look, I think we're losing the run of ourselves. Mayo are a different animal. They probably started their gallop a little too early last year. They're coming into the championship with a lower profile this season but they're still a dangerous animal to be dealing with," stressed Evans.

"I expect them to come out all guns blazing. Anyone that has any doubts about them are going to be disappointed. They want to win the All-Ireland and prove everybody wrong. They are the second best team in the country and went very close to Dublin in last year's All-Ireland final. They gave Roscommon a bit of a drubbing in Castlebar last year.

"We'd be hoping for an improvement. I think that if we can give them a close game, a far more competitive game and a good game, I'd be well pleased with that."

Sounds like a honest opinion more than mind games? Lets be fair the rossies will probably be happy with competitive display on Sunday.

I don't really think its mind games in fairness. Likes to talk a bit Evans, but he is a genuine fella and has the Rossies on a good path atm.

It's only this Mayo team who can decide what the outcome of the game will be. We should win of course but a flat performance ala Derry and in certain spells during the national league, ie Cork, Westmeath and even the collapse against Dublin, the team will have to battle for it. Which will be seen of course as a finished Mayo team by the media etc. if the Rossies push us:rolleyes: Hopefully the weather stays dry for it now, looking forward to it

Roscommon (SFC v Mayo) - Darren O'Malley; Seán McDermott, Niall Carty, Neil Collins; Ian Kilbride, Niall Daly, Ciarán Cafferkey; Cathal Shine, Kevin Higgins; David O'Gara, Donie Shine, Ronan Stack; Senan Kilbride, Cathal Cregg, Ciaráin Murtagh.

    Roscommon team according to Hoganstand.

One change, Kilbride for Keenan who is injured.

I don't think so lads. They're on a high after their promotion plus with their U-21 team doing well. They will be out to beat us Sunday, not to just put up a competitive display.

Comfortable Mayo win without really hitting top gear I feel.

Seasoned top four outfit well used to operating at a vastly superior level against a side that has been hanging around division 3 for a few years....

    Only one winner.

    Mayo by about 10 .

Who knows, our unbeaten run in Connacht has to end sometime. Shades of 2011 here. This is certainly a banana skin but if we can get past the Rossies and a hungry Galway/Sligo team it will be our best run through the provincials in a long time.

If Roscommon were to beat Mayo on Sunday who would you put your money on to get through to the semis? I think most people would still back Mayo. I've got no issue going in through the back door if we can make it out the front!

We cant be cocky going into this and we will get a 100% competitive and tough test and rightly so. We come out of there next Sunday with a couple point win I will be happy, to think we will hammer them in the Hyde is exaggerated.
I'm hoping we are wounded and ready for a new fight, if we are not we won't win it.

Think Mayo at evens -5 are a great price. €50 and the day paid for. Just make sure and place the bet in the bookies in Roscommon town on the morning of the match and make sure to loudly announce your bet much to the joy and admiration of the locals.....

Exactly, all it takes is one defeat and the Connacht record is gone.

Sunday screams banana skin tbh. I'm still confident we will win by a few though.

Opposite side of the ground, instead of turning down the road to the hospital, go to next roundabout and turn left, the golf links road I think its called. Season ticket holders have to go in through this entrance to get your cards scanned. They WILL NOT entertain requests for any cards not scanned, be warned!!

Shane Curran was at something similar in a local paper too. I know Shane well, and I can guarantee you, that behind all the "we haven't a chance" talk, Roscommon will be incredibly wound up for this game. They'll feel that at home, they can beat anyone. If Roscommon people aren't short of one thing, it's confidence

3 changes made. Caff, Conor O'Shea and Freeman in. Andy drops out along with Keane and gibbons

I don't like the half forward line of c oshea, Doherty and diarmuid o Connor. With all respect to the new lads, there's no experience there, it's the weakest I can remember in a while.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,249 ✭✭✭MaroonAndGreen

Lads whats the story with the half-forward line, nobody can convince me that Diarmuid O'Connor is good enough at the moment to be playing this kind of senior championship game. And Conor O'Shea has barely played for us before in league or championship.... Of course they are very good footballers but I dunno if they are ready for this.. Has to be a dummy team it just has to be! No Andy Moran? Is he training poorly or is it an injury worry?

Happy with the backline and especially happy to see Zippy in corner-back :) half-forward line is the only worry.

Anyone know whats the story with Adam Gallagher???

I can see C O'Shea starting inside & McLoughlin coming out. Like the look of the team and a very impressive bench

Be very very surprised if that team/half forward line starts.......the Mayo news podcast dir predict conor o Shea possibly starting though !

Dunno what the story is with Adam Gallagher, he looked very good in the few games he played in the league. Certainly should be ahead of D O'Connor and C.O'Shea - he definitely wasnt injured against New York and them boys got a run out ahead of him.

On the face of it it looks like a weak HF but remember the lads need championship experience and you know the HBs will be propping them up anyhow. Andy will be waiting in the wings to come on as an impact sub and I assume Dillon and Feeney will be on the bench also. Kevin McLoughlin is sure to be roaming around like a wolf as Freeman and Cillian should have FF well covered. In fairness HF has always been problematic for us so no harm to try out something new. Bit surprised to see Conor O'Shea in ahead of Drake as he didn't really feature in the league but no harm to shake things up. Horan may finally be taking some cues from Dublin in how he uses the bench.

At the very least we have a solid defence, Roscommon will need to make every shot count as their current blanket defence will mean they will need to frustrate Mayo, make them doubt themselves up front and quickly tear back up the field. If Mayo can build up a good lead early on it will be hard to see Roscommon pull it back.

Don't think we will see any of the O'Sheas moved from midfield as there isn't really anyone else to replace them.

Drake is a half back. They do need experience but we need a win, Sunday certainly isn't the time for experimentation.

SHOCKING how Richie Feeney cant get a look-in with this team, absolutely shocking!
