I don't get the uproar about this.

He has an opportunity to manage Celtic, a club guaranteed to win the league and play in champs lge every year. It'll do wonders for his cv and his stock will rise.

His second option is to remain as ASSISTANT manager for a country ranked outside the top 50 in the world which will involve watching derby v Rotterdam on a cold November night in the hope that Richie Keogh might actually show an ability to clear the ball.

    It's a complete no brainer.

Edit: my rant is the notion of entitlement that is embedded in the majority of Irish people

Sure I could manage Celtic and win that league, there's no challenge there.

His stock will only rise if he does the following:
    - Get out of group stages in Cl
    - Wins league by 15 points at least, anything else is a failure.

So he'd be better off staying as assistant manager with the national side?

That's what it ultimately boils down to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,905 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

Simple answer yes. He learn more and his stock would rise more if Ireland do well.

Remember Celtic only want him for a ticket selling pr stunt, as no rangers, hearts or hibs up there.

My brother in law manages an under 9s team. They won the league the weekend and have been promoted to the Scottish premier. I expect them to challenge next year ;)

Of course he should take it! Nobody ever have a rats arse about the assistant manager in the past. I never bought into the oneill/Keane management team. It was only oneill as far as I was concerned.

Rant: how Roy Keane still holds the imagination of most Irish sports fans

you'd be ripped off having to pay for two eye's if it was the other way around, clearly the company's are thinking of these people :D

I hate flippin dogs when I run.

In town the amount of dog poo on the pavement is mind boggling.

You can't run country roads without being jerked by dogs barking and running full speed to their gate. Sometimes they jump the blooming gate. Sometime there's no gate.

Sometime you get chased by 3 dog racing greyhounds in the middle of nowhere...

If it was me I'd put the VAT on dog food at 500% !!!!!

...but you can't beat that adrenaline rush you get at the top of a 500ft climb when you know that little bastard is waiting for you but still when he bolts out the gate and takes chase, you can't help but get that bit of a pep back in your step. I could do with that at the 3k marker in a 5k race.

3 toilets in the pink section of the Dublin mini marathon for 5,000 ladies WTF was that all about. 1 toilet for the elite runners. They had to go down the lane and behind trees. Absolute disaster for organisers. Then from the finish line had to walk another km back to the baggage section - which no fecker put notices up to show us which direction to go back to

    (loved the new route thou)

I know! I'd been pressuring all my friends to try to get a time for the 'Elite' (;)) section -- I was selling it with tales of shady warm-up streets, water dispensers, toilets etc. But no, this year it was toilet and water free, and only a horrible warm-up lane. Hopefully next year it will be back to the old route (which I preferred, that extra pull up the drag after the flyover was a killer!)

Unsupervised children in housing estates. 3/4 and 5 year olds out and about with not an adult in sight. Unreal!

I always struggle to think of what goes through a parent's mind when allowing this? "Ah if they happen to get knocked down and killed it's all part of life, or if someone should harm them or take them, sure it's all part of life." Or are they completely ignorant and clueless to dangers?

While I agree with you in general, part of me remembers that we all grew up playing on the roads and streets without adult supervision. What has changed? Road safety? Nope. Far fewer deaths on roads than 40-50 years ago*. Child abductions? Perhaps there are a couple of cases every year in Ireland, but I can't imagine that this is a new phenomenon - it is just more visible now (I'd imagine that many such cases went under the radar, when we were children). I'm not saying that children should be unsupervised - just that there's no sense in a nanny state either. Some form of compromise with playgrounds and shared supervision should be possible.

    * Based on US-specific statistical comparison on a recent Freakonomics podcast

Not talking about nanny state. I am talking about parents being responsible for their children. Just some supervision in estates where cars are a lot more prevalent than years gone by. I am also speaking about very young children here.

Not 8/9 and 10 year olds who have some level of road sense. As children grow and mature a parent allows them more and more freedom. I can get this. There is no excuse for a complete lack of supervision for young children. The ages I am talking about. It's damn neglectful and careless.

Out of curiosity, what did you do about it? Continue on your journey and post about it on Boards?
Did you consider mentioning it to the parents in question? To the Gardai? Social workers?

    I hear you.

There have been times where I have had to stop my car and advise or help. Thing is that this can be risky too. Stopping your car to speak with a child or "remonstrate" with a child.

Anyway, housing estates today are a hell of a lot more busy than years gone by. I remember being able to play a full tennis match on our road with barely a car interruption. Not a hope of that today. Every house has at least 2 cars. Cars parked all over the road and cars up and down the road, and 3 and 4 and 5 year olds up and down with nobody in sight. Sometimes there may be an adult. Thing is they may be 100 yards away. Useless should their child dart onto the road.

Most of the time nothing happens. I am aware of this, but how can a parent take that chance with such a young and helpless child? They do not have road sense.

Out of interest, would it be an idea to keep rants ART related?

This thread seems to create a negative vibe in the whole forum?
