God, I'd crack up if I had to do night work. It seems that a few on here do it...

It's not so bad. I get 4 days off every week, it's quiet at night and I still make a good few bob :D

Why god are golfs so dear   Would love a mk5 :(

Bpmull I'll swap ya our 206 for your golf. I think we know that you are getting the better deal here :pac:

They do seem to make huge money alright even the 1.4 mk5s. I nearly cried having as much as I paid for mine. You'll never really understand why they make so much until you actually own one :) . I have to say I love my one and everyday I'm noticing new features on it. It's amazing how modern and advanced the mk5 is considering they were launched late 04. They do tend to hold there value well so you could look at it that way.

Really? I always thought they wer shockingly plastic and cheap feeling for the "luxury hatch" they sell themselves as. And the 1.4 is a godawful model, woefully underpowered and an absolute sow on petrol

Your right about them holding their values so well though, to a lot of Irish people a VW badge seems to be the pinnacle of car ownership and the market value they hold reflects that thinking.

    1.4 vw golf
    Performance of a 1.0, tax of a 1.4 and fuel bill of a 2.0

Tis an old adage but it's true.

1.6 16V FSI in the MK5 should be allright, but the 2.0 16V TFSI would be the best though. :)

I think if I were looking at a petrol mark 5 golf I would have to have the 2.0 (or GTI) with a DSG box. Or actually better still, the vr6.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,830 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

    No VR6, it's the R32.

I think the GTI is the sweet spot, I'd always give a well kept one a second look.

Would there be many 1.6 petrol Mk 5s in Ireland????

Have seen some Jettas alright with 1.6 petrol engines for sale - but they are still rare enough imo compared with the 1.9 or 1.6 diesels.

Incidentally - have never seen a 1.4 tsi (122 ps) Jetta for sale - were they even offered here with that engine - I know the Passat was and have seen one or 2

The 3.2 is a VR6 engine, probably one of the best engines VW ever made.

Uses the VR6 engine though, which I think is what he was getting at. Lovely idea, utterly ruined by Irish tax.

Very true, I was thinking in terms of badging.

Coming off the ferry the other week I saw an R36 Passat. They really are subtle.

I wasn't sure whether they changed the name for that model.
I like that engine, having driven one a while ago but I just couldn't pay the top rate of tax for a 3.2, knowing that a 4.0-8.0 engine would have the same tax but with better performance.

    Tell me more.

I'm off to Thailand tomorrow morning so I could need all my peacemaking skills. Or else you will see me in 4 months time on BANGED UP ABROAD on TV3.

In other news I've been investing in carats.

@Gvidro what have you gotten now, a Colt CZC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭GvidoR

    Gvidro? Who's that? :pac:

Anyways have a look at the "something I did to my car thread"

    Oh, nor can I.

It should be on the road this week, I just have to have the bonnet sprayed then and it'll be perfect.

Crazy to think I took two months to get the Wolseley road-worthy, yet it has taken me less than a month to get an engine and gearbox into this.

Lads I'm in a bit of a pickle (wehey!)

I might be collecting a car later on tonight in wexford, problem is, I've no way of getting it home, so these are my options

    Do I
    A) Drive it home untaxed, insured, nct'd and run the risk of getting done, or
    B) Tow it

I can't afford to get it trailered back so that's definitely out, I'll be going along the N25 to waterford and up the M9 if its any use

If it's only tax out, sure what harm?

Nooo it has nothing, no tax, no insurance no nct it's last nct was in 2012 :pac:

    So what do i do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,917 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

As long as it's insured, I would think that a Garda would be a bit lenient considering you are on your way back from buying it.

At the same time, I wouldn't be one bit surprised if a Garda did you for no tax or NCT.

I know see that's the problem, I can't get it back to my house any other way than either physically drive it or tow it back
