Leaving a PhD after a year.

    I started a PhD in the sciences back in September, unfortunately things haven't worked out as well as I hoped and I've made up my mind to leave. I am wondering how bad would it look on a CV to have spent the best part of a year in a PhD and to leave with nothing? Despite really detesting the work am I am better off sucking it up and trying to work towards a masters? Obviously a CV will look stronger with an MSc opposed to just a BSc. but how would prospective employers view someone who spent almost a year in research and has nothing official to show for it?

    You were actually a "research assistant" in CV terms, and in reality it is only a few months, not even an entire year. You could stay either, and every Ph.D involves moments/minutes/weeks/months of doubt. In some areas a research MSc might earn more kudos than others, but imho in sciences you either do a taught masters or a full PhD
