seems to be lots of road bikes on donedeal at the moment. A cynic would think that its people who got them on the "bike to work" scheme and are now cashing them in.
I would go for an alloy framed one, rather than carbon. get as good a quality group set as you can. I have a Specialized, and find that their own brand "Flak-Jacket" tyres are very good. Seriously puncture resistant.

Yep adverts and done deal are great. I don't know about not buying carbon, I would, depending on the frame, use, age and maintenance. I would say get a cheapie, see how you like it then get a nice one. The Halfords Carerra TDF gets good reviews and people seem to be happy with it so that might be a good start.
Also the BTW scheme means there are more second hand options for people like me who can't get it but want second hand bikes

Not sure if it is as it seems. Ireland is not unique in consumers buying cars at start of year.So car makers have to stockpile. all year long until Jan1st. Only now would the stockpile be reduced down. Google maps is not real time so you cannot check at present.0 -

It's already addictive! Always loved cycling but never went more than 4 mile. Started doing 22k regularly and pushed up to 35k a bit too. Would hope to be doing 60k+ regularly if I got the road bike, well able for 50k as things stand but nowhere near fit. Been averaging about 25kph+ so far.
Not considered anything like a sportive really. Motivation isn't an issue. Would hope to be able to do over 100k by the end of the summer.
Been looking on done deal, looks to be some great value. Rather buy once, hence buying s/h. Would pay 500 for a good one like.
It certainly is! I do 200-300k a week, training twice a week and racing once a week on top of it. It really is addictive-you won't find it till your spending hours out on the bike!
€500 will get you a grand second hand bike. For that you will be looking at an aluminium frame, carbon forks, and I would want at least Shimano tiagra as a groupset, you may even get 105 on an older bike. Wheels and groupset are where it's at weight and quality wise, the most popular frames have a lifetime guarantee (trek, giant, specialised, felt, fuji, but not from Cube, lapierre, my head is empty at the min). Wheel wise, look for something that has had the wheelset upgraded, stock wheels can be ****e and it's what bike companies save money on, or buy one with crappy wheels and upgrade yourself. Adverts, done deal and eBay are your man.
Also buying bikes is addictive. I 'need' another two.
Sportives are a nice aim,I always trained and cycled on my own. 100+k is way easier when your with people, and you stop for tea and cake in the middle

Hi, I found the flakjackets pretty good, but then don't ride in much urban setting, so glass is pretty rare.
Probably the luddite in me, prefer weldable alloy to the black art of carbon fibre.
