Buying Instruments On-line (Guitars)

    Hi all:

    Have you ever bought an expensive (used) instrument (in my case acoustic guitar) from a private seller on-line without playing it? ie: E-bay and Adverts.ie etc?

    Currently looking at a few instruments but its a bit of a minefield.

    I know quite a lot about guitars but never bought without playing before. Any tips/experiences? Cheers

    If at all possible, you should try before you buy, especially with an expensive instrument. "Adverts" should not present a problem, as you could travel in order to play the instrument.

    As for E Bay and similar type sites, the only thing you can do is to check out the seller's feedback. Dont be afraid to ask questions and ask for more or better photos of the instrument if necessary. Paying via "Paypal" gives you some comeback if anything goes wrong.

    To answer your question, yes, I bought two basses without playing them. One on E Bay and the other on a USA forum. I had no choice but to buy on line because I could not try or buy the bass I wanted, here in Ireland. Luckily both transactions went without any problems.

    You can get great bargains buying on line, but without a face to face transaction, it can be a bit of a lottery, and a lot of hassle if anything goes wrong.
