J.E. Ritter established Ireland's first hydro-electric power station generating electricity from the River Roe and supplying it to houses in the local town (Limavady).

There seems to be more anti-culture up there as opposed to actual culture.

That would emanate mostly from loyalists.

Even though when they are at home they consider each other polar opposites, when abroad Protestants/Unionists/Catholics/Nationalists are all seen by others as 'Irish'.

The Delorean car brand was manufactured in Belfast.

Northern Ireland are the smallest country ever to reach a World Cup quarter final, they achieved this twice in 1958 and 1982. They also qualified for the tournament in 86 going out at the group stage.

Up until 2006 they were the smallest to have ever even qualified for the finals, Trinidad and Tobago took this away from them.

I thought they had no quarter finals those day (70s/80s), just successive group stages and semis/ a final?

Edit: Upon quick research it seems they reached the 2nd round of the WC in 82 .This means they made the last 12, coming last in their group.

the most northerly place in Ireland isn't in Northern Ireland - Malin Head.
    ( I blame the Brits)

never knew that. Some achievement all the same, for such a small population.
What was the best Jacks army made it to "back in the day" , when there was all the excitement - was it the last 16?

Thats a blasphemous, treasonous statement....Jacks Army reached the quarter finals, only losing by a goal to Italy. As well as that they reached the European Championships, something NI have never done.

Around the late 80s the torch seemed to pass to the Republic, and since then NI havent been up to anything aside from handing minnows rare victories.

Norn Ireland had to play within a war zone though in the early 80s, many of your players were foreigners anyway

Judging by the number of Northern players who have started playing for the Republic after the Good Friday agreement came into effect, many of yours were too.

    Pat Jennings
    Jimmy Nicholl
    Mal Donaghy
    John McClelland
    Chris Nicholl
    Martin O'Neill
    David McCreery
    Norman Whiteside
    Sammy McIlroy
    Gerry Armstrong
    Billy Hamilton

That was the team v Spain 1982, as far as i Know 9 of them were born in Norn Ireland,
the ROI starting 11 v USA 1994 only had about 4 who were born there.

I'm not even sure why i'm arguing, sure I support the yanks, Australia and Scotland in the soccer

Some people even refer to Derry as - shock, horror! - Londonderry

Brown lemonade (as far as I know) is usually only available in Norn Iron

6 out of 10 men still have kneecaps.

I have no citation but have often heard that NI has some of the best knee surgeons in the UK, which is likely due to their experience...

Not a fact but someone from Belfast referred to me (from Donegal) as being from the south, and another person from Galway referred to me as a northerner.

So my fact is Donegal is not in Northern Ireland.

For a thread about Northern Ireland, there's an awful lot of talk here about another jurisdiction. Is that unusual in Northern Ireland threads, or does it come down to some kind of obsession?

The Giants Causeway is World famous as we know.

Though did you know that one in every three hundred of the pillars is carved into the shape of a Penis.

The pesky Mexicans are seemly to blame for this.

Wayne M'Cullough who won a Silver Olympic medal for Ireland is a Shankill Road native from a Loyalist background. He never let anyones politics get in his way Loyalist or Nationalist, he worked up from the Amateur nationwide IABA. He made the choice to represent team Ireland in 88. Went to Seoul as an 18 year old before winning his silver four years later in Barcelona.

Belfast is in both counties Down and Antrim. Lads refer to females as "wee girls" no matter what size or age they are. Everything is a lot cheaper than rip off Republic. Potato bread is amazing.

    Some devilish posts in here.

Bushmills distillery is considered to be the oldest licensed distillery in the world.

Also given the tiny population in Norn Iron - we have produced some outstanding talent, notably George, Rory and Joey!
