Yours is far easier to read mate, good job. I'd like to see the Ravens bring in Richardson or Hurst.

Bailey has been signed by the Seahawks I saw on Twitter, watch him become a star now :pac: Christian Jones will be very capable too.

But surely in the year 2014 it shouldn't be a suprise ? He was co defensive player of the year in the SEC which is a good college football conference last I checked so his talent won him that award not what his sexual orientation.

I know it's a news story but why should it be ? I mean some of the stuff players have done pre and post draft and yet they still get drafted or allowed back in the league but a player who is gay is a seven round draft pick ?

I get that part nerd but he shouldn't have been drafted just to avoid negative pr for the NFL. Either he gets drafted on his ability or he doesn't .

Almost 50% of Americans believe in Creationism. The amount of players who thanked God when they got drafted astounded me, I probably should of expected it though. He's going to have team mates and coaches who don't like him or feel he's living a life of sin simply because he is gay. It's a big story.

    Evening lads.

Who are you all hoping for today? Big need at OT for the Ravens still so I'd like to see us pick up James Hurst at some stage. After OT all our needs are covered so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens. Drafting a QB is probably nailed on too.

Hurst joins as an UDFA. Happy with that.

sure in an ideal world but its not an ideal world homophobia is the new racism and its important that guys like sam blaze that trail so that others feel its ok for them to follow. its a massive social issue at the moment in america look at how the patricks day parade thing spiraled out of control a business like the nfl cant afford something like that.

i think he was worth drafting in the 5th round so 7th was good value for him. even if it was not people who would not be massive nfl fans would have been told by someone that in there opinion hes for example a 5th rounder and chinese whispers turn it into hes definitely a 5th rounder.

im rambling a bit but my point remains its unfair to guys like skov and it should be about talent alone but had michael sam not been drafted it would potentially have taken the nfl years to recover as it is now it encourages more gay players to come out which can only be a good thing.

also in the traditionally "macho" world of the nfl this is a massive chance to break the mentality of the idiots like chris culliver a few players like sam in the league and all of a sudden it stops being a deal

Ravens, Giants and Bears had UDFA offers in for Sam if he had made it that far, per PFT.

apparently his nickname is "murderleg" legatron is no longer the best kicker nickname in the nfl

also apparently the kicker the bears drafted benched more than clowney not really relevant for anything but interesting fact

I don't think anyone here thought it was a surprise, nor did anyone here suggest orientation played a part in his drafting. HigginsJ relayed the news about him getting drafted and I mentioned the tweets of support he was getting on Twitter. I think most, if not all of us here are well aware of his football ability and achievements.

Personally, I couldn't careless what a player's orientation is. All I care about is, can he play his position well? And will he improve my team? And I also think most of the posters here would agree with that and with what I said earlier...
It should always and only ever be about Football.

We might be better off asking the NFL Network and the associated media, about why is it such a news story. For me it should be a non-story, but because it's a first, a big deal is naturally made of it by the media. But the guy does deserve praise and admiration, but not for being gay, but for being a trailblazer. Because of him, it will no longer be a big deal in future and it shouldn't be. But he has made life an awful lot easier now, especially for players who may wish to follow his example.

It was the NFL's Rosa Parks moment. A lone, brave young black girl, stood up the White establishment and said I am proud of who I am and I am no different than you. So she sat on the Whites only bus. Michael Sams did the same thing. He told the football world he was gay, he told us he wasn't ashamed of it, didn't want to hide it or who he was. And just wanted to get on with being a football player.

As to where he was drafted? Well only the various draft war rooms can answer that. But I think the NFL deserves credit for how it has responded, reacted and supported the lad in general. Especially when you compare it to other sports. The brutal and tough world American Football seems to be more open and tolerant than the 'manly men' of soccer. How many gay players have come out in the English Premiership or in the La Liga? Yet this is the sport, where players require the use of a stretcher when you clip an ankle. And that's coming from a United fan btw.

I don't think this year's QB class is necessarily as mediocre as it might appear.

I think there are plenty of sleepers taken outside the first round. However I'm really not big on any of the three QBs taken in the 1st.

I think (& I stress think) that you can be financially better of if a team wants you as a priority UDFA

That used to be the case but the league wasnt happy about it as a player drafted should be rewarded.

Average signing bonus for a 7th round pick is between 30k and 60k

Teams have a budget of 80,362k for all their unddrafted free agents. Cap rules will still be met when the final 53 is decided.

Both the 7th rounder and the UDFA are going to play for pretty much the same salary. The budget on signing bonuses stops your franchise from giving lots and lots of upfront cash to a player to get him to your camp.

How you use that 80,362k is up to the teams. Blow it all on a few players or bring lots to camp or dont spend it at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,784 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

No surprise that nobody has signed Lyeria, he will be lucky to get an opportunity and he'll probably blow it away if he does get one.

As for Michael Sam, its all good and well saying you don't care about his orientation and its the way people should think but from living in the US in the past they are different over there. There is a lot more of the gung-ho attitude and fear of being close to a gay man. All you need is a top player on your team to be upset by having him around and a coach is going to have to let Sam go because at the end of the day the best players on a team are more important than political correctness and while that isn't what we want its the way a coach has to be in the NFL, you have to be ruthless to win.

Yeah I have to say I was massively surprised at some of the comments people were making on twitter about them showing Sam kissing his boyfriend. I wasn't looking for these comments, they were right being repeated over and over again.

In this country we've had some high profile stars come out as gay (Donal Og being one) and they've been applauded for their courage and welcomed back to the dressing rooms like they should be. While Sam was given the height of praise at the time I think it's easy to forget that America is such a diverse country where people can have radically different views on a vast array of issues.

As Eagle eye has said, the best players can be more important than political correctness. Okay if someone down the depth chart does something to Sam then there's gonna be trouble, but if someone who the team identifies as a leader makes a fuss then nothings going to happen. The team would probably cut Sam to keep the team chemistry going.
It's probably going to take the likes of a starting QB to come out before it is ever truly accepted in such a macho league.

10 years ago maybe, but when look at what happened in Miami with the bullying scandal. I don't think there's any way a Coach would take such a risk and discriminate against a gay player, just because a star player is upset. Not sign him maybe, but to take him on and then do that? I just couldn't see that happening. In this social media age it would be everywhere and a coach would be collecting his P45 in no time.

The Colts got a very good UDFA in Zach Kerr. I thought he'd definitely get drafted and pretty early yesterday.
