Average file copy speeds over Cat5 at home?

Hi all, just looking for some feedback on this please.

I am copying files between the 2 PCs on my home setup:

1x Windows 8.0 PC with 1gb wired ethernet over Cat5E
1x Windows 8.1 PC with 1gb wired ethernet over Cat5E

Both connected into UPC Thomson TWG-870U (UPC 200MB Broadband connnection.)

My best speeds have been around 67mbps. Is that about average or should I be getting faster speeds. I understand disabling firewalls etc. can speed up things but I'd rather not do that completely. I'm curious to find out what other home users are getting. Anyone got any tips for better speeds please?

For comparison, on a corporate network with 1Gb switches, I get about 45-55Mb/sec (Taken directly from the windows copy window details).

If its about 50 - 60 ish its probably the disks or something holding it up - it can go about 110 - 120

Livewire are you reading that result from the windows copy dialogue? If so its MBps not Mbps, just for clarity.

10/100 maxes out at 12Mbps so if you'r getting 67Mbps the links are operating at GigE. Real world such a link will max out at ~95Mbps(80% efficiency), give or take. That said, SMB copies can be slow, especially if its lots of smaller files vs a few big ones.

Whats probably slowing you down in this case is the HDD. My seagate 7200 mechanicals benchmark about the 70MBps write mark, so that matches up, especially if windows is accessing it every now and then for OS operations.

Hard disks speeds are as follows...

Seagate 7200rpm SATA 2 - 1x Windows 8.0 PC with 1gb wired ethernet over Cat5E
120GB Samsung EVO 840 SSD SATA 3 - 1x Windows 8.1 PC with 1gb wired ethernet over Cat5E

99% of the time I am copying large files from the SATA 2 disk to the SSD.

You could make a ramdisk to try out

loads of them for windows

The Windows 8.0 pc has 16gb ram and the Windows 8.1 pc has 8gb.

Its just windows/NTFS then. SMB copies are rarely super fast anyways. TBH it should be plenty fast as you wont be writing that much if its a 120GB drive.

It makes a new ( imaginary! ) disk in ram - ram is much faster

so it will be like C, D, RAMDISK

It can be useful for testing
- just copy some file onto your new "RAMDISK" disk for testing
- copy that file across the network

@ ALL, I just realised, my apologies - BIG mistake on my part

Drives are as follows:

Seagate 7200rpm SATA 2 - 1x Windows 8.0 PC with 1gb wired ethernet over Cat5E copying to...

Samsung Spinpoint 2tb 2.5" (M9T) SATA 3 drive running at 5400rpm - 1x Windows 8.1 PC with 1gb wired ethernet over Cat5E

The 120GB Samsung EVO 840 SSD SATA 3 is the actual OS drive which I am not copying to in the same pc.

its handy at times
- say if you were running a pc off a memory card, the cards wear out after too many read/writes ( its much better these days )
- so you make a little ramdisk and do all the temporary stuff in there - your card will live much longer
