Fibre download speed slower than normal broadband

I see from Eircoms website that I can finally get fibre broadband :). However when I enter my number into their line checker it says the maximum speed I can expect is 15MB download speed. I can currently get 16MB on normal broadband  Is it possible that fibre speed could be lower? What has anybody else got in reality compared to what Eircoms website tells them and what they get when it is installed? If the web site is correct then there is no reason for me to ever get fibre.

Yes, totally possible. It means your relatively close to the exchange but relatively far from the cabinet.

You should still get fibre. Download speeds will be similar but upload speeds will be far higher. This will make a big difference to gaming, skype, peer to peer, posting images to fb, dropbox syncs, uploading to youtube etc etc.

Also, when the cab is "upgraded" to vectoring you might get 20Mb.

Not getting this. So your wire pair goes to a bundle which is routed (underground) to an exchange. A VDSL cab would break into that bundle between your house and the exchange, so how could the distance to the cab be greater that the distance to the exchange? Maybe I'm not understanding how this VDSL stuff works

    "Relatively".

DSL goes up to 5Km. VDSL goes up to 2Km. The OP is approx 2100m from his exchange, but that could be him-1500m to cab- 600m to exchange. That means good DSL speeds, but poor VDSL speeds as VDSL is very distance sensitive.

VDSL offers much better upload speeds. Could still be worth it if that's important to you.

    Ignore the speed calculations!

I have checked numbers that already have efibre and it really underestimates the speed.

similar situation to myself, I'm 2.5 km from Dunshaughlin, the line length from my house to the exchange is approximately 3.1km and my sync speed is between 7.3 and 9.8meg, changes every day.

The nearest cabinet to me (not live yet) is about 1900m from me and it's highly unlikely i'm connected to it. However if I am connected to it when it go's live I would get no more than 7meg which is up to 2 or more meg slower than what I receive now.

I had this happen to me as well when I checked in January. I was getting a sync speed of 21 Mb/s on ADSL and on the same line they estimated 15 Mb/s download on VDSL . I rang eircom and they confirmed this, they did say I might get a bit more and they pointed out that vectoring would also improve it.

As others have pointed out above, ADSL is less sensitive to distance then VDSL and it may well be that the cabinet you are connected to is not that much closer then the exchange. Once vectoring is enabled on your cabinet it should make a difference. I wonder does is the line checker taking account of vectoring ?

    ^^^

I'm looking forward to the reports from those on ADSL directly fed from the exchange migrating over to VDSL (also directly fed). If the line length remains the same, worked out by the known distance and/or attenuation, then a very good comparison from existing ADSL attenuation to VDSL attenuation and distance/expected profiles can be obtained.

I'm 2.5Km directly fed from an exchange that is supposedly going fibre enabled at some point. My ADSL attenuation figure puts me at 2.1Km if you use the checkers. Hence my very keen interest to see if lines over 2Km can be enabled with VDSL once vectoring is in place. Even if the download remains the same, the lack of contention and vastly improved upload would still be worth it.

If it prequals for 7Mb you'll get VDSL. If not you wont.

How do you mean prequals? At present my line rate is 6144 kbps but I saw earlier link here someone with a 1dB higher line loss but is on 7168kbps. In theory then my line should be able to sync at 7168 as well.

Just for info. Finally got the Fibre installed and I am getting the speeds below. The checker was quoting me a max speed of 15. Installer told wife we are directly connected to the exchange for some reason even though the nearest cabinet is about 400M away. He said ours was the first connection of that type he has done. The exchange is about 1km drive away but according to my attenuation of 23.6 it is about 1.7km as the cable runs. My attenuation was 22 when on adsl??

My Eircom stats are 25dB line attenuation and SNR of 15dB on a 40/10 profile. I'm guessing I'm at 1.25Km - which ties in better with your expected line distance to the exchange.

There maybe a chance you might actually be able to get bumped to the next higher profile 25/7 without your SNR reducing too much. Perhaps...

There was a post here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=89601821&postcount=204 about getting the HG658 to display the actual net data attainables of the line. Might be worth looking at. Let us know if you find out as the info is very useful for line speed/distance calcs. :)

What exchange are you on that theyve started direct fed lines on? You're very lucky to have that so soon.

I am on the Skerries exchange. It only became available to me last week even though the area was enabled last August.

Good stuff. I suspect a lot of direct fed boardsies will be delighted to hear this is moving along.

No need for the downstream SNR to be that hight. You should phone and ask for the next profile up.

Here my stats again including the hidden stats. What profile should I request with an attainable download rate of 28192. The upload doesn't look like it can be upped much at 5513?

Ask them to bump you to the 30/8 profile. If that can't happen, tell them to bump you to the 25/7 profile.

Here is a list of profiles.

    Slightly out of date

Theres actually a 28Mb profile, but you'll either want 30RA or 25 Fixed.
