    Friday 18th April

Recovery run. Glorious morning in St Annes park Raheny for this recovery run. Mostly on grass and trail. Left quad and hamstring clearly still a bit tight so took it really handy and was just really shuffling along. Enjoyed it though and did plenty of stretching afterwards. Lots of activity there with the Brian Boru festival going on.

Been on a diet of chocolate, Ben & Jerrys and alcohol all week:D so time to ease off a bit of that too , well maybe after the weekend;)

Enjoy every bite! Did ya not know that chocolate is great for recovery ?:D seriously though your body deserves some treats after what it went through on Sunday, huge congrats again you did a super job. I have to say that from looking at it on TV it looked so warm, I know I for one would suffer badly in that heat, so I think you should be well proud of yourself!
DCM 2014? When can we start the thread? Ha :)

30 minutes on static bike. 17km. First sign of energy from legs since marathon. Good to perspire again.

Will try 3 or 4 miles very easy tomorrow.

    Sunday April 20th

Plan was for another easy run to just get back into the swing of things. Ended up doing this a bit faster than probably I should have. The legs felt really strong though and just went with it. Then during the run my hamstrings started shouting WTF are you doing ?! There's still a bit of tightness there and memories of mile 19 came flashing back. Enjoyed this run but will need to cool the jets if I am to avoid getting back into it too soon and injure myself. SO I will just run every other day in the next week and try some bike work and stretching on the other days.

I'm already thinking about what plan I might follow for DCM and have an initial target in my head time wise.:)

Be careful!! I felt ok quite soon after DCM and got back to training for Ballycotton -- and ended up with a month of bad running and then a compete month off (with exhaustion! A la Lindsay lohan!)

Just take it easy and taper back up slowly.

    Monday April 21st

30 mins on static bike (15.5km) followed by 15 mins stretching

    Tuesday April 22nd

Easy effort run that ended up more in the steady/MP range. Ran by feel rather than looking at the watch and it did feel like easy effort. It's all good though as I wont be running tomorrow so no danger of doing too much too soon. It'll be S&C work tomorrow with some more bike work.

Increased the distance just a half mile over last run so I can gradually get back up to longer runs over next couple of weeks.

    Thursday April 24th

On a training course this week so it being the last day today managed ot get off home earlier than usual. Used the opportunity to get out for another run. Beautiful evening for it. kept it slower than last couple of runs and increased the distance slightly again. This strategy is working well for me so far.

I am doing the Samsung 10k on Sunday because I've a group of 27 from the club at work doing it. I'll decide on Sunday night, probably at the start line how I'm going to approach the race. I reckon a small pb is possible without busting a gut but I'll see how the legs are doing before I make a call on it.

    Best of luck tonight.

Cheers, but I've decided I won't be racing it. Too soon after marathon, need a few sessions under the belt first and I've been eating junk for the last couple of weeks. So I'm just going to enjoy this one and use it as a colourful training run.

Next goal race will be a 10k in Paris on May 24th. I'm taking a work team over for a European event.

    Sunday April 27th

Easy run. Just took in the atmosphere, enjoyed the surroundings, no pressure for PB..............Hmmmm well that's what was supposed to happen.

    What actually happened.....yes you've guessed it, I didn't listen to my own advice...yet again!

Ok so I rocked up to start line after meeting up with the work gang and was completely set on just "jogging" around. Went into the 46-55mins pen and everything. Somehow the group got a bit split up in the crowd and I was now in a smaller group. Grand, just gonna "jog" around anyway. Gun went and we jogged then stopped , then got started again. All very slow in first mile, congestion was just crazy. Spent most of the time just trying to make sure I didn't trip over someone. All good I thought to myself, no chance of going too fast here so suits me fine for what I wanted to get from this run.
So second mile goes pretty much the same, I'm feeling very comfortable. Pace has picked up slightly but still not much room so just gradually moving through the crowd and enjoying the atmosphere..
Mile 3, there's a little bit more space and I start to pick up the tempo a bit. I think sure what's the harm. I'm not racing it but this is beginning to turn into a bit of a progression run. I meet a pal of mile during the early stages and run with him for a minute . He asks me what time I'm going for. I say I'll be happy with something around 50 mins. He says he is trying for something a bit faster. Grand, you go on ahead I say I'm just going to coast around. By mile 5 I've picked up the pace again and it is closer to a pace that I might have gone out at if I was racing this. Still definitely not racing this, but I'm certainly not just "jogging" around at this stage. Kept the same pace for mile 6 and just kept it steady without pushing too hard.
In a funny turn of events my pal then comes alongside me again just as we turn the corner heading for finish. So we chat for a second and then almost instinctively we go for it to the finish. A bit of a sprint to the finish ensued over the last 100m or so. I felt really strong at this point so this was a great feeling. Ok so maybe I didn't need to do this but ended up a good tempo session which started out nice and slow and gradually ramped up.

The course was a nightmare to be honest and I wouldn't go for a pb on this course unless I was well up the front. I saw at least one poor girl go flying along the ground which must have resulted in a nasty graze. I heard stories of people running into parked cars. I saw runners climbing over barriers shortly after the start because they were on the "finish" side of the street. There were just accidents waiting to happen all over the place. The stewards did a fine job as usual though, but they really do need to rethink the course for this run.

Anyways , a good run for me just under a minute outside my pb(46:42). Since I wasn't even trying, this tells me that there is a new 10k pb waitin g, next time I race one proper.

Splits for run were : 8:58,7:58,7:27,7:18,7:07,7:07,(6:23)

Nice run RedRunner! To be honest, I'm AMAZED you didn't race it all :D but I'd say if it had been a 'normal' kind of race and more conducive to racing, you might have been a little more tempted:)
With proper effort from start to finish you would blast that time outa da water! Exciting to see what you'll do when you do race next.

Steady run .Didnt feel like much effort. Legs feeling a bit meh though. PF seems to have flared up a bit .Same foot as prior to marathon. Fine running on it but will have to manage that one and do plenty stretching and use of the tennis ball for massage.

Was going to try a bit of a session tomorrow evening. Anybody think it might be too soon ?

    Wednesday 30th April

Was tentatively looking at doing 5 - 6 miles, tempo with 2 x 10 minutes in the middle at 10K pace, 4 minutes jogging recovery in between

Felt this might be a little too much with the PF niggle and still really in recovery phase after marathon so if I could do 1 x 10 minutes then I'd be happy.

Didn't set this up as session or anything just ran for 20 odd mins to warm up then hit lap button for the 10 mins section. Was expecting to see new timer for 10 mins but it just reverted back to original display so just added 10 mins to the clock time I started from and hit the lap button at end of that section. There's probably a better way of displaying this so must RTFM:)

Ended up with 4.94 miles @8:12avg

    made up of

    8:59,8:40,8:35(0.48mi)
    10k section (10 mins): 1 mile @6:54,0.5mi @6:56
    c/d :0.97mile@8:41

The aspiration is to run 7min/mi for next 10k attempt. Based on this effort, need to do more work. No major issues with PF during the run.

    Saturday 3rd May

Had a chance to try a parkrun again after a gap of nearly 12 months as injury and marathon training had been getting in the way,so jumped at it.

parked my car at a friends house who lives nearby , went for a 1 mile warmup before calling in to friend. A friend of hers was also coming but was a bit late so a bit of a tempo run over to start line to warm up even further. We could see them all heading over to the start as we were coming down the avenue but we were still a bit away so by the time I got to the start there was just enough time to reset the watch and try get a forward position at the start. Before I knew it we were off so no time to think about it really. Would have preferred a few mins rest after the warmup but sure not to worry.

In my head I was thinking if I could hold 3x 7ish min miles today I'd be delighted as I've done no speed work worth mentioning and just easing back into things after London so although I though a small PB was on the cards here I wasn't going all out for a lung buster 5k. I just wanted a good test at the pace I mentioned , something to work on for further 5k and 10k attempts.

It went really well, settled into a pace that I felt I could hold and still leave a bit for the end. First priority was not to pick up any injury and second priority was to run a good time. My previous 5k pB was 22:15 so I knew I could take at least 30 seconds off that anyway thank to my recent marathon training. Kept the pace nice and even for first two miles 6:59 and 7:00. All according to plan. In the third mile I was still passing people and could feel that my marathon training had given me that little bit of extra strength. Breathing only began to get a bit heavy as I turned onto the finishing straight which I think is about 900m! SO the big question is always going to be when do I kick for the finish. Just gradually tried to increase effort and was picking off a few people as I went and with a 150m to go I just pushed it as best I could without straining anything too much. Legs felt good as I finished.Mission accomplished, really enjoyed that run. Last bit done in 6:50 and (5:10) pace.

Official Time 21:12 placed 34/283 and 6th in my age category. New PB by just over a minute. Delighted. Happy Days.

Wore my Boards AC top which attracted the attention of Murph_D from on here, great to meet you today D.

    Sunday 4th May

#1 son's match was called off so decide to get up early and do the club run this morning. Now had I been training for a marathon, I would have had Meno or C_M or both onto me WTF are you doing after your fast session yesterday. But I thought it was worth a gamble since I'll be resting Monday.

I hadn't really planned to but as things transpired I ended up running with a group that'd normally be faster than me so decided to see how long I could hang onto them for. Part of me thinks I should do it more often to help me improve but I'm still not sure about that. This was going to be the longest run since London so I would've been happy with 8 miles.

We were tipping along nicely and I felt comfortable. Some were going a bit longer than 8 in fact more like 13/14 but I decided to settle on 10 based on the route we were going to follow. Legs were still feeling yesterday's park run, but not so much that I had issues just a bit of tightness in one calf and overall slight achiness but was feeling good throughout this run.

Bit of mixed bag pace wise but there was a nice little section towards end where we were closing in on HMP which I kinda enjoyed.

    10.54mi @ 8:25avg

    Splits: 9:00,8:33,8:34,8:24,8:40,8:32,8:38,8:03,7:59,8:19,(7:37)

Ok, maybe slightly crazy and possible risk of injury but I enjoyed letting loose a bit on this run. Wont do this every week, but I do need to work out what my new training paces should be.

Does this generally depend on the specific event you are training for?
If I plug in my 5k time for yesterday, macmillan puts today pace in middle of "Easy" range for long runs. 7:58-9:15 based on target 10k time of 44.30

I'm not really sure what my easy pace should be for this phase of my training:confused::confused:
