Don't like the man and a lot of his ideals, but massive respect for raising all the money for great causes.

I’m normally not a massive fan of Anton, he always sounds a bit like an over excited puppy, but he is so far above Ray, it’s not even funny. That segment about the DIY would have been a total snooze fest with Ray, but Anton actually made it fun and interesting. Anton can do the light hearted stuff but has the intelligence and insight to do the serious stuff too. It’s beyond me why he is stuck in a Sunday slot when he would be perfect for Ray’s show.

He is in the Sunday slot for a reason, he may have 20 or so fans on this thread however if he ever got the show full time the listenership would drop dramatically. He is simply too bland for this show, in my humble opinion.

Yeah, I used to like him - he seemed so sophisticated in comparison to Ray - but he just comes across as too stylish, too smooth now.

I don't agree at all. I think he is quite the opposite of bland. Ray is blandness personified IMHO. His Sunday show seems to be quite good (although I haven't heard much of it in fairness) It's a tough gig filling in for someone on a show like Rays, I think if he were in that slot full time, he would bed in and make it his own. The fact is that Ray's show is already heamorraging listeners. I know there are some proffesional moaners on this thread, but the fact is that there are a lot of us who used to like Ray and have just found him too full of himself, too preachy and too serious lately. Someone like Anton could return the show to it's fun past, while still having the gravitas to do the odd serious segment.

In fairness Darcy is the king of bland.

That's the beauty of this thread, it's all about opinions. The fact that two people can listen to exactly the same thing and get two completely different takes on what they have just heard is what makes this thread interesting.
I have said before that Anton comes across as a likeable individual but I have to be honest my heart sinks when I hear he is taking over from Ray.

Wednesday and no mention of running, kids or eject. Even the non runner Will sounds good. He's probably stuffing his face with Pringles when the rest of them are out running.
Hope Anton is on for 2 weeks .

first contribution to this fine thread...

dont really listen to Ray much, but would generally have TodayFM on the radio most times. More often than not, I end up switching him off, his pretentiousness and scorn and ability to pass judgement on people really annoys me (yes, yes, irony!). A few recent snippets I heard of him though:

He had Conor Pope on talking about Good Friday and the pubs closing. Conor Pope said it was a good thing to have just the 2 days (Good Friday and Christmas Day) as it at least promotes a time for family where the family are essentially forced to spend time together rather than have the option of going to the pub. Ray disagreed, because its foundation was based on Catholicism. He could not acknowledge the fact that giving publicans 2 days off was a good thing for society in general, because it was based orignially on religion. He couldnt just leave religion out of it. If I was Pope, I would have asked him does he have a problem with every thing to do with religion that society in general accepts, ie Christmas, Easter, St Patricks day etc. Some bank holidays etc. Religion may be the basis for some things that are done in this country, but a lot of it is gone past that now and there is no need to make every thing that happens a stick to beat religion with (I'm not a religious person at all BTW).

He had the 2 chaps from Moone boy on. Not only did he mention his 2 children on 2 seperate occasions to them (why I dont know, or for what relevance or why they would care) but he went on to list out child actors who failed and gave up on it and asked them would they give up on it and lose interest in it. I mean, seriously? these lads are 13 or 14, and he asking them crap like that.

he had a comedian on, and of course mentioned his infamous interview with Seinfeld, and again, blamed Seinfeld for it all. He made so many cock ups that I cant remember them all, between getting facts wrong, and just generally insulting him. Everything revolves around their looks and appearance. Oh you look bigger on TV, you're fairly small. He claimed he was 5'8 and a bit too, which I doubt, but thats a different matter. And why it was of any relevance, again, I dont know.

He had another comedian on, and asked "whats your favorite animated movie. Mine is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs". nevermind waiting for your interviewees answer, tell everyone yours Ray.

As said, everything revolves around running and his children. now, thats great, and at the end of the day, it is called the Ray Darcy show. but some people dont want a show to be about Ray Darcy. His negativity in everything is remarkable, and I suppose what prompted me to write this was listening to Anton Savage and just his enthusiasm, positivity and having the craic with people and guests makes him so much easier to listen to. He doesnt moan and whine (hello irony again), and just makes it a light entertainment show, which is what it is supposed to be. The general smut of Darcy and the not so suttle sex jokes are ridiculous too. Anytime anyone mentions "long", or "baps" or something very harmless, he makes little tittle tattle smutty jokes out of like a teenage boy at the back of a classroom. thanks god 50 shades has gone out of view, as it was borderline obsessive how much he went on about that.

anyway, I just realised I listen to his show far too much, for what little of it I do hear. Should just switch off when he comes on and not annoy myself.

I saw him on the Dart once. He's no more than 5'5

Unbelievable! Its just after 9.30 and talking about puffins now. Ray would still be going ..."Ah, lets see now, what else does it say in the papers", for the umpteenth time.

Does anyone get the impression that Will and Mairead are not too fond of Anton?

Mairead seems to have quite a domineering attitude to him? For example, never letting him pick his own music. I remember a while back where he wanted to play Creedence Clearwater Revival and despite all the texts saying they wanted to hear some, she insisted on playing Rihanna or Aviici instead.

It's been quite a while since I listened to the show when Anton was on, but, at the time, I got the distinct impression that Mairéad was just about tolerating him.

Louise Duffy has just mentioned that d'arcy will be broadcasting from cork next Monday and will be interviewing Roy Keane. Have your dials set to cringe folks. It's going to be biblical;)

Maybe it's the fact that Mairead feels that she should be covering the show instead of Anton and resents the fact he is doing it? It would certainly explain the playlist thing and the way she tends to boss him about...

I always got the impression Will and Mairead like Anton. When he's on they have more freedom to laugh and joke around. They only joke about not letting him pick the music as he has an older taste in songs that they're not into.

This same discussion happened last time Anton filled in for Ray and iirc the general consensus was that Mairead flirts a bit with Anton.

    ^^
    this

It always seems to me that Mairead fawns over him, almost flirty.
There is fun slagging that hes not that old yet is into really old fashioned stuff.

I get no impression at all that they do not like him.

Used to catch the beginning of rays show on my way to work in the morning.
I stopped listening to it a few weeks ago.
A colleague remarked on my improved mood in the mornings today!
Unfortunately, I think that's a worse reflection on me than on Ray.

I'm the same myself. I used to love Ray. I was even in the studio for one of those "talk to listeners who..." segments a few years ago. But lately I can feel the negativity ooze from the speakers and life is really too short to be listening to that, so I switched to Lyric in the mornings and I feel ten times better.

I'm back this week for Anton, though. I love that guy. :D

I echo the above, been listening about 7 years now and have just had enough. Iron men, 5-10 ks, off the couch, up me hole....sick of it.
Defecting over to AK & JD on 98 11-12, decided not to rile my new boss by having a single earphone in outside of these hours...."doesn't look good" apparently, "people may think you have nothing to do" and my favourite "you may miss an interesting work discussion in which your input could be invaluable"!

2-The number of times running has been mentioned on the Ray Darcy show this week.
1- The number of babies mentioned this week.
0- The amount of people dancing in the kitchen this week.
And 0- The number of 35 stone truckers crying this week..
With Anton's help we can reduce these sickening figures even further.

There was a mammy dancing around the kitchen with her little ones to James Brown this morning. Warmed the cockles of my heart it did to hear that text.

Very enjoyable show this morning, loved the bit where Roy Keane said he likes to keep fit and look after himself at which point you could hear Ray getting excited before Roy swiftly added "without being preachy about it":D

Ray played a bit of rugby? God i'd never of thought that.

Ha Ha. Brilliant. Ray was only on air a minute this morning before he mentioned going for a run :)
