Disqualification from driving and naturalisation approval

    Hi all,

    I'm going to apply for naturalisation (Irish citizenship) in coming weeks, but I've been thinking is there a point to do this in my situation, so hope anyone can clarify it for me.

    I was disqualified from driving by court back in 2008 for 3 years and I think I can't expect approval for some time, but do anyone know for how long?

    I meet all of the other requirements, so that's the only reason for refusal.

    The current minister is granting naturalisation in some cases that the applicant had a conviction. It may be that the minister may postpone a decision for a period of time to see how the applicant behaves.

    Why commit the crime in the 1st place if you wanted to become an Irish citizen?

    I believe we are too soft as our laws are also.

    There is a rumour that if you have been on good behaviour for the last 5 years, it should be fine. There are no guarantees. It is all down to the minister's decision in your particular case.

    If you really have to know I didn't have a plan to commit offence (crime sounds to serious in this case)....but anyway nobody got hurt....so that was a lesson for me.

    Outstanding citizen....educated, permanent work for last 7 years, never applied for benefits....so yes you're right....well above average! :-D

    Own up to the conviction, apologise for it, point out that you've been on perfect behaviour since. If they have nothing else on you, you have a good chance although as stated above the Minister might defer the decision for a year or so just to make sure that you really are reformed.

    To get a three year ban would indicate a serious enough incident. This would not necesarily rule your application out particularly if all other aspects of your life in Ireland are positive e.g. employment, education etc.

    He does say that "nobody got hurt" which indicates some type of collision rather than being stopped at a checkpoint. People only get the high bans when the matter is serious

    I have asked for a legal advice and people point of view about positive application approval and I noticed that conversation is going other way.

    Ok to completely clarify, that was drunk driving, no collision and injury...stupidity in pure form! Solicitor predicted 2 years ban max, but got 1 extra from judge.

    I apologize if I offended anyone with my sarcastic comment, but I simply hate being judged by anyone who doesn't know me at all.

    Now we know you're a drunk driver and can judge you as such. I'd like to think that your application is now a waste of time, but maybe others can better advise.

    Just to clarify, driving while over the limit is a crime.

    Others already have. Knowing it was drunk driving doesn't change my answer.

    "stupidity in pure form" If that was grounds for deportation we would have no government at all in the country
