That's a rather no-so-subtle change of my phrasing. Did you do it for dramatic reasons or did you miss the point?

I used you as a example of how the show failed to convey what was in the books... i.e. that outside the walls the partying Northmen army was decimated by Frey soldiers.
Oh, I get you now. I'm not aware of the "fact" of what's in the book as I can only know what's depicted on screen.
I still don't buy it mind you. Thousands of soldiers at a big wedding party and nobody notices that not a single person on the bride's side is on the batter... stupid Northmen!

I hope to $DEITY that there's a massive scene of the guys outside the castle, because in the book that was really well described. And I think they could easily afford to drop a big chunk of the budget on the Red Wedding scenes - it's that important in the scheme of things.

That's the biggest let down of the series for me, as I've no beef with whether it's much like the books or not. Every battle seems to be off camera. Spartacus had fairly believable battle scenes on what I'd imagine were similar or lower budgets.

GRRM has addressed a scene in last night's episode that is causing a bit of consternation, particularly amongst ASOIAF readers. I'll need to spoiler the whole thing, don't read until you've seen Season 4 Ep 3 or have read well past the King's Landing wedding scene.
    Fan to GRRM:

Could you tell us what you think about the altar sex scene between Jaime and Cersei in last night episode, please ?
Many readers (and viewers) don't understand what happened and why they changed this sex scene into... a rape scene. Does they consult you before doing it ?

    GRRM:

Re: Jaime's changes in Breaker of Chains
This is off topic here. This is the section for comments about Junot Diaz and Anne Perry and the Cocteau's author program.

Since a lot of people have been emailing me about this, however, I will reply... but please, take any further discussion of the show to one of the myriad on-line forums devoted to that. I do not want long detailed dissections and debates about the TV series here on my blog.

As for your question... I think the "butterfly effect" that I have spoken of so often was at work here. In the novels, Jaime is not present at Joffrey's death, and indeed, Cersei has been fearful that he is dead himself, that she has lost both the son and the father/ lover/ brother. And then suddenly Jaime is there before her. Maimed and changed, but Jaime nonetheless. Though the time and place is wildly inappropriate and Cersei is fearful of discovery, she is as hungry for him as he is for her.

The whole dynamic is different in the show, where Jaime has been back for weeks at the least, maybe longer, and he and Cersei have been in each other's company on numerous occasions, often quarreling. The setting is the same, but neither character is in the same place as in the books, which may be why Dan & David played the sept out differently. But that's just my surmise; we never discussed this scene, to the best of my recollection.

Also, I was writing the scene from Jaime's POV, so the reader is inside his head, hearing his thoughts. On the TV show, the camera is necessarily external. You don't know what anyone is thinking or feeling, just what they are saying and doing.

If the show had retained some of Cersei's dialogue from the books, it might have left a somewhat different impression -- but that dialogue was very much shaped by the circumstances of the books, delivered by a woman who is seeing her lover again for the first time after a long while apart during which she feared he was dead. I am not sure it would have worked with the new timeline.

That's really all I can say on this issue. The scene was always intended to be disturbing... but I do regret if it has disturbed people for the wrong reasons.

Now, if you please, I'd appreciate it if we could get back to Junot Diaz and Anne Perry and the subjects of the original post.

That scene was so badly directed even the Rape Crisis Centre are sticking their oar in now.

This is a series that involves babies being butchered, young boys being castrated "root and stem", torture, gang rape, child brides and some of the most creatively brutal deaths you can imagine
Viserys crowning being a definite contender for my personal "least favourite way to die"
    .

I don't know about anyone else but I'd rather be pressured into having sex somewhere inappropriate by someone I love than any of the above so those getting offended will have to forgive me for thinking them morons to be upset about this scene.

This, definitely this. Considering the characters involved and the cultural context of the show... it ain't so much of a big deal.

Man I was worried that this would happen, that we would end up with spoilers in the show which the books haven't had in it.

Has GRRM confirmed thats how the books are going to go though, it could be just a dumbed down tv thing? Disappointing if so, thats the kind of lame cliche Id expect to see in the new Star Wars or something, piss-poor make up job on him aswell.

If it is real thats me done with the tv show after this series anyway.

    In fairness to the show
the Night King was mentioned in the second episode by old Nan telling bran about him in a story.
All these westeros myths and legends are all probably true.

Has there been any more info on whether or not the show has started spoiling future books now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 172 ✭✭clashburke

Fan: [cut] Was the final scene from "Oathkeeper" confirmation of something that many have suspected, but has not yet been explicitly revealed in the books? [cut]

GRRM: Once again: how many children did Scarlett O'Hara have?

Basically means that the Tv show will be different to the books on a number of important things. So who can say if the show is going to spoil the books or not?

So far the show on season 4 is going through the 2nd half of book 3, iirc.

I do hope the TV show is different from the books from here onwards - I can't see anyone being able to make anything out of book 4...

There are parts of AFFC in this season, no? I thought some of the timelines had been merged as in the books they run concurrently.

Book 4 (A Feast for Crows) is the dreariest thing I've ever read (except His Dark Materials). Book 5 (both parts) is worth reading. I'm glad I read it but if I ever reread the series, I'll read the plot summary on Wikipedia.

No, book 4 is a bit of a let down after book 3, as it's pretty lacking in action. It also suffers from how Martin chose to divide the action between it and book 5, focussing on one the group of characters in southern Westeros, with the rest appearing again in book 5. This means there's probably too much focus on a couple of the characters, though there are some new and interesting characters added. Book 5 is great though, despite being mostly divided as book 4 was.

Book 5 is very good and worth reading.
    Jon
barely features in book 4 while we hear nothing about
    Tyrion or Daenerys
    .
After the opening, Feast just becomes an account of various characters traipsing around Westeros. I think that we need something slower paced after A Storm of Swords but not nearly this slow. Martin has said he won't be separating the characters again if we ever find out how the series ends.

I liked book 4 and five. Imo, best books in the series.

I thought the characterisation was the best I've seen?

Also, they are seriously changing the character relationships.

In that timeframe, Peter would not have wanted Sansa telling the secret.

I really disliked A Feast for Crows on my first reading but I was coming to it fresh from the fast pace of A Storm of Swords and A Clash of Kings. On my second reading, I really enjoyed it. It's a lot slower paced but much more nuanced than the first three books. Though I agree the splitting of the characters reduces the enjoyment of the read.

I can recommend the suggested chapter reading order for combining AFFC and ADWD into a chronological read here: http://boiledleather.com/post/25902554148/a-new-reader-friendly-combined-reading-order-for-a

You, sir/madam, are now my nemesis.

Glebee, don't worry about the show. Read the books to get a different experience - they ain't the same. I really enjoyed AFFC. Maybe more so than book 5. You'll never know until you read it yourself. :)

It's not that book 4 or 5 are necessarily bad - it's just that there's been a surge of really good fantasy books in the past few years (Pat Rothfuss, Scott Lynch, Steven Erikson, Joe Abercrombie, Stephen Donaldson finally concluding the Thomas Covenant series, etc), that it just turns book 4 and 5 "ok" in comparison.
