Line capable of 15Mbps but profile set at 12Mbps

Hi,

just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation as myself and can offer any insight into how to have it sorted....

I have up to 24Mbps broadband currently with Sky. According to Sky the max speed they can provide me is up to 12Mbps because that is the highest profile setting for my line allowed to them by Eircom who apparently control the database.

I previously contacted Eircom about having my profile enabled from up to 12Mbps to up to 24Mbps but they refused to help because I was not their customer and said profiles on lines etc is sensitive internal information which would not be divulged.

At that time Eircom's own website only allowed a general test that said you could get Broadband from them up to 24Mbps, but now I see they have like sky the extra information of what max speed your line is actually likely to achieve.

According to the Eircom line checker, my speeds are likely to be a max of 15Mbps. How can I get this profile option enabled on my line?

Sky say Eircom only currenly allow the 12Mbps profile option to them on my line and Eircom won't do anything about changing it as I'm not a customer?

I know how to acess my stats, thanks for trying to help, but my point is that those stats are the same ones used by Eircom to tell me I can get up to 15Mb so that's not the issue.

Incidentally, I don't use a sky router and operate on the 10.x.x.x ip range here so the addy wouldn't access my router anyway.

It's down to being allowed have a profile which will enable my speed to go over the artificially set max of 12mb that is currently set by Eircom, despite them saying I can achieve up to 15Mb. How can I achieve 15Mb if the profile option isn't even there to try?

If you're a Sky customer, you should be contacting Sky about this. Sky use Eircom's lines. Your speed depends on how far away from the exchange you are, but there is another factor like noise on the line.

If you can post your stats, I can tell you if your line is capable of 15Mb.

As per my first post, sky say the database controlling available profiles on a landline is controlled by Eircom. The profile above 12Mb is not available to sky to implement on my line, and Eircom basically say I'm not their customer so sod off.

Eircoms line test is saying I can achieve up to 15Mb, but they won't enable the profile above 12Mb to allow this to be implemented by sky.

I'm not sure what to say. Maybe your exchange hasn't been upgraded to ADSL2+.

Click on the exchange and click on ADSL, it'll tell you if your exchange has been upgraded.

Where is the eircom line checker, by the way? Do you have a link?

OK, thanks for your offer of help but my problem is just to have the profile above 12Mb enabled, it's got nothing to do with anything else, yes my exchange is an ADSL2+ enabled exchange.

The Eircom checker is available when you select one of their broadband packages on their website and click on 'check availability', see HERE

Here, access your router and put your "downstream line attenuation" into calculator: http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php

Make sure your noise margin on your stats is at least 6dB or more because if it's lower than 6dB, they can't bump you to a higher profile.

If your line is capable of 15Mb, then I don't know what's going on. I would probably leave Sky if other operator can provide faster.

You are being really dismissive of people trying to help you. As a matter of fact, it is all about the stats. Your currant attenuation and SNR margin determine your attainable speeds. You're noise margin needs to be close to 7 for a stable connection. Most of the ADSL 2+ profiles are rate adaptive anyway so they will sync at the highest stable speed available on your line.

What is your currant SNR margin? That's the only question that matters.

Eircoms online estimation is just that, an estimation. The reality depends on your stats and possible internal wiring issues etc.

I agree, you need to post your line stats.

It don't matter what eircom think or say your line is capable of on the speed checker.

Snr is needed as it can depend on so many factors.

I can see the problem straight away,
Your line has no chance of holding sync at 15mb anything lower than a SNR of 6 will very likely give you an unstable connection.

At 31db attenuation you should have a higher SNR at 12 so I'd definitely look at internal wiring.

Unless you had a SNR > ~11 you won't be able to get a higher sync than your current 12mb.

Yeah, as I suspected, your noise margin is too low for a higher profile. When it drops below 6db, your line disconnects and you'll pull your hair out in frustration. You're on the same profile as me but my stats are better (line attenuation is 27.5db); however, my noise margin is below 7db. If my ISP tried to bump it to a faster profile, my line would suffer from constant drop-outs.

Cheers for the info folks, probably shouldn't have posted here right after coming off a call with sky, being put on hold, passed from one to another and finally being told they could increase my speeds if the profile was available to them and said Eircom were the only ones who could do that.... very frustrating.

Just for what it's worth I was syncing at 12Mbit when my attenuation was 31db on ADSL2+ too so it's in the right ballpark anyway. Lines aren't perfect unfortunately, but if you wanted to try you could make sure the internal wiring is clean and the splitter and cable are of good quality. Probably won't make a difference though.

I had 11mb on a line with 46 attenuation.

My SNR was low but rarely dropped.

I'm in a new housing estate with a shielded 3 pair coming from my cab.

Attenuation maybe high but it comes down to amount of crosstalk and interference on the line.

Sky helpfully increased mine from 6Mb up to 10 which was closer to the line maximum of 12. Problem was, it made the connection completely unstable and Sky couldn't fix it. I went to Eircom on the eFibre anyway, but be careful what you wish for with Sky.

That's just it, I have no problem with it if it fails, I can just revert back to the lower working speed, but Sky have told me they can't even try that because the max profile available to them on my line is 12mb as imposed by Eircoms database over which they have no control.

It's all well and good saying it won't work, fine and no arguments with that, but I would at least appreciate the option to test that theory out. Nothing ventured nothing gained kind of thing.

With a noise margin of 6.4 you just can't go higher.
