See difference between how easily the mule slipped out, compared to the texel one he'd to pull. Unfortunately I've a lot of texel in my own girls that are due to start lambing tomorrow

Yea I gave up texals a couple of years ago as too many needed to be handled. Lovely lambs when they were out though

Hope ye have all/any little people in the house watching LL :)

Little one 3 yr old was watching it for a while. She loved coming down to the shed with me in the evenings to see is there any lambs.

Ya, what happens when your ewes have too much terminal breed in them , I'm off to get a maternal ram for replacements in the summer

That's the first farmer on Lambing Live I've seen using a glove, even kate doesn't use one

Always only dose ewes at lambing here, we find that there's a lot less worms in the lambs early in the season if we do, but you won't find that in a teagasc book though

Do you dose before they lamb or after they lamb ?

3wks before, Teagasc claim they never need dosing, and probably worms don't do the ewes any harm but they do put out a lot of worms on the pasture after lambing

You may be on to something. I think generally with adult dogs they aren't routinely wormed the same way as pups. However a lactating bitch should be wormed and I think I read somewhere something about the pregnancy stimulating dormant worms or something like that being the reason. It could be similar with ewes.

Have Sky here, used to know about the other craic, will have to look into it again.

I have sky too and managed to add BBC2 Wales to other channels so I could watch it...I think I put the frequency to 10788, frequency I cant remember (but there are only 2 options) the next line down I switched to 5/6...give it a try when its on air and it should be easy enough to get it to appear...

had some mules this year with a beltex ram, same as the guy on the show. most lambs look nice, except for the few that seem to have taken all the genes from the mother and none from the beltex !

Those lads have some good quality blackface ewes. Could never understand why the lanark was bred so short in the leg though. You would think hill sheep would benefit from a longer leg.

Interesting piece on embryo transfer, disappointing how few held though.

Easy walk that hill, want to bring them to this part of the world, mud, rock and bog and a gale of wind to keep them off balance :pac:

That Man has some farm, and setup. Anybody else leave the sheep out all day and just put them in at night durning lambing ?

I didn't really get this part. What about the ewes that lamb during the day? How can he guarantee that they all lamb at night?!

I don't know, he must have a small paddock alongside house or something. I tried letting them out into an yard alongside shed one year but worked out terribly for me. When ever it rained the ewes got socked and then brought all the water back into shed in their fleeces and meant shed was very damp. The flip side is it you could master it, it would cut down straw and feeding needs of shed

maybe he lambs them out by day???
and brings the newborn lambs in according as they lamb.

he seems to have a good set up with quiet ewes...so should be well able to manage it

I'd say he's set up to lamb out mainly, he doesn't seem to have space for 600+ ewes to lamb at the one time which is what he scanned. Would say its done for the show to a certain extent maybe????

Bringing in ewes at night and out again during the day is a disaster for pneumonia I'd say:confused:

He does change the raddle every six days, but even with that, he's very short of facilities.
300 have lambed here since the 1st march. 40 individual pens and it still wasn't enough...definitely lambing most outside,
I'd guess that even the fancy race was put up for the show

Jeez don't fancy the way the huntaways are "mesmerizing" that ewe.

I can 'mesmerize' them just as well with the quad

Is that the new term for worrying then.

If I saw dogs at my sheep like that I'd be reaching for the .223.

a few years ago I met up with a branch of the family which I had never knew existed. long story, but surprisingly common in this fair land of ours. lovely people, but I was almost cast into outer darkness when I asked the husband if his dog had a skite of Alsation in him. NO. He is a collie ! :)

Any one notice the smaller shed they showed last night. It was just made from rsj's, sheets of plywood, green netting for side walls and a dirt floor. A fine shed for small money .
