And tax till the end of next month. "nicest car on donedeal for under a grand"

I say he's right. That's an awful lot of comfy car for the money. Nice find!

ok so its time to replace my last bangernomic which is due its nct and going to cost a bomb to pass...
Ive been practising bangernomics and really its the way to go, for the past few years or so but finding it hard to find one this time..

Looking for nct to 15 , plus bit of tax would be good..

    previous bangernomimobiles have been

4/13-4-14 Volvo S80 2.0t Current Banger Bought for €400 One yr ago with full nct. Now needs a belt, wp, 4 tyres, front shocks and bushins etc etc cost a shed load .
3/12-4/13 Xantia t/d , bought with full nct, €780, ran for a yr and sold for €500, no a cent spent on it bar diesel
3/11-3/12, 99 Toyota Picnic, cost €0. Spent €0, sold for €280, when nct was up.
    3/10-3/11, xedos 9, 2.5, bought for €700 , drove for a yr and sold for €400
    3/9-5/9, 405d bought for €50, nct;d drove for a bit and sold for €450
    5/9-3/10, saab 900 bought €900, sold €900
So bangernomics works ive spent a total of €2830 on cars in the last 4 years and recouped 41630 of that, net spend=1200 , if any one spots/has a candidate, ill buy it and post updates on same.

thats a great bangernomics record - chapeau!

Any preventative measures for dreaded sludge?

Yep, drop sump and refill the system every 6k with fully synthetic oil

If you're really keen, replace the breather kit, but not really worth it for an under €1k car

I did neither on mine BTW :)

Or just buy an '04, did no longer have the sludge issue (because of the new breather kit) and also available within bangernomics now :D

How much for the kit itself?

Thats a great find. It looks very clean too considering the miles, which in reality isn't a whole lot for one of those.

That's class. Be snapped up in no time I'd say.

Engine bay looks well minded too. New oil filter and HT leads by the looks of it.

That's been offered for sale for 3 years on the run and the mileage has yet to change despite it being in use. It's also on it's second owner and those pictures are the same ones being used for the past couple of years. Although I've no doubt its a nice car and is pretty original.

If I could view it this weekend I would. But I can't as I'm all booked up.

    I know, often enough I see something and I'm like: That's so awesome / I so want that / I already have a car / Don't have enough for a 2nd car. :(

Put your car up for sale and buy whatever you fancy here. Take a little risk, go with your excitement and live a little :)

I need a little bit of work done and I'll get NCT passed on it, drive it for a bit and then I'll probably sell it. Not exactly sure when that's going to be though. I would like to keep 2 or even 3 cars, but right now I can't really afford to. :P

    That Saab is fabulous looking.

How costly a job is that from a regular mechanic (all in)?

Regular mechanic, I don't know. A Saab indy should be able to do these blindfolded, so should be quicker and charge a lot less

I think a Saab enthusiast told me at the time that it was about €200 (including an oil filter and new oil) from an Indy in Clontarf. Maybe someone else here knows who he was talking about and has contact details.

Did you drive a 9-5, Trojan? Not everybody's cuppa and certainly not a drivers car, but they are one of the best value for money cars out there imho. I owned one for 2 years, nothing costing more than €50 went wrong with it and I sold it for €100 less than I bought it for. Great, safe, luxury, different family car. With the best cupholder in the world :D

Sorry to go slightly off topic; but what do you mean by that unkel? I only ask because a bangernomics 9-5 or S40 are on my radar within the next 6 months.

They are based on an opel vectra platform which was never renowned for its driving dynamics. As a comfortable cruiser though they are fine.

I'd be looking out for everything! I don't think they're prone to any problems in particular.

Cheers. I really like the Avensis (in general) and this one is only just down the road from me here in Mayo, hence my interest. But to be honest it just looks too rough to waste time on. The look of the car is important, I need to show up to meetings and look half decent and that won't cut it.

Cheers for the info, much appreciated. I've never driven a Saab (history: 2L TDI Mondeo, as well as a Focus estate, and a fun week or so where I had to mind a Z4). I did drive a Buick Regal in the states, that was a couch with wheels on each corner.

I think something like a 9-5 would suit me just fine right now, if the running and mileage costs aren't crazy (I do a fair bit of motorway). I'm not in any particular rush, and I am definitely going bangernomics, it just makes too much sense not to do that, some great cars listed on these threads.
