Do you print your photos at home or get them done in store?

And which is cheaper/better in your opinion? I've been getting around 100 prints every 2 months done in Harvey Norman and I've just realised that their prices compared to some smaller local shops are astronomical :eek: It's my own fault for not shopping around I suppose

Anyway, it got me thinking and I was wondering would it be worth investing in a real good quality printer and just do them myself at home? Does the amount of photos I print justify buying the printer or should I just leave it to the professionals?

It wouldn't be cheaper to do them at home. Get them done by photobox or someone similar.

Other than 1 offs I'd rarely if ever print at home these days. Just too expensive.

I too get hundreds of prints done in Harvey Norman but I find them quite reasonable compared to others for instant printing. Locally, in Cork, 5x7s' are half price on Fridays, (which is the usual standard size that I get)and 6x4s' are half price on Tuesdays I think.

For anything decent or for better quality prints I'd usually go to a dedicated camera/print shop.

minilab type prints for small sizes will always be the cheapest

so harvey normans / online etc

BUT

if you print the same image at home or in a pro lab, the differences are:

generally wider colour gamut
much better black and whites
get paper choices
can print slightly odd sizes etc

but yes is is going to cost you more

i have got a lot done in aldi, they only do gloss but im more than happy with the quality of them ,

I didn't even know aldi did prints. Do they do them in store or online?

i have found photobox good and efficient to use
For special prints Steve Crozier 360 dpi in Dun Laoghaire.

Contemplating biting the bullet and buying a printer (Epson R3000 or Epson 3880 being looked at) for ease of accesss of speed of seeing result. The Epson 3880 was the printer used when I attended a great Print Workflow course held by SineadW about 2 years or so ago.

Will still use photobox or 360 dpi in future for really special photos as likely to screw up home printing !

No matter what you do, the main thing is to print out photos and not to have them lost to the mists of the hard drive of the computer
