Hi guys, TCD is down on the CAO and I'm wondering if I go to Halls will I be able to make sure I get to stay with a friend?

Also are people picked purely on who applied first or is there a lottery for places?

When applying for Halls there's a place at the bottom of the application to request sharing with someone. You just put in their name and CAO number. Plus applying for a twin room means you have a greater chance of being accepted

It's not a lottery, and several factors are taken into account. Make sure you write a good personal statement. Your location will be factored in too, but this does not guarantee you a place. I know of people as far away as Kerry and Galway who were rejected, while there's several students from Dublin county.

But what if I'm booking a single room in one of the modern apartments? Can I request to share an apartment with a friend?

Yes you can. But make sure you put single room as your preference and his/her name down on the list

It's something to note, just don't bank on getting halls, I did this year and when I didn't get it I had two seriously stressful weeks trying to find somewhere to live! Your not guaranteed a place when you apply.

Definitely. I didn't get Halls myself until January, and ended up living an hours train from college with family. Make sure you have a second option, be that a house sharing or other student accommodation

Okay thanks for that advice guys, I'll make sure to have a back up plan. So do you think I should go for Halls or private?
    Here's my thinking...
    House Pros:
    stay with friends
    more privacy
    more space/facilities

    Halls Pros:
get to know loads of people
have access to halls recreational actvities

If you're on your own in Halls you'll make the extra effort to make new friends. If you live with people you know you will be more comfortable at the start, but if you have old friends living anywhere in Dublin you're never more than a half hour away.

I find with people that in 1st year go to college and love with friends don't go on to make too many new friends, because they don't have to make the effort. Chances are your housemates in Halls will know nobody going there and you'll end up becoming good friends with them fast.

There's pro's and con's for both, and you should go for whatever you think will work for you
