Laptop crashing & rebooting continually after automatic Win 8 update

Since an automatic update yesterday my laptop keeps crashing and rebooting every 20 minutes or so. It is a Packard Bell Easynote running Win 8 64 bit.

I get a Blue Screen with the Win 8 :( symbol and the message says we've encountered a problem and need to restart. It also says it's gathering information and also says if you need more information check registry_error but doesn't give a code.

I have searched the Windows 8 forum and there is mention of laptops going into a rebooting loop after an update but this actually completes the reboot, the laptop seems to work fine until there is a lull in work and then crashes!

I have cleaned up the registry using both CC Cleaner and Auslogics Registry Cleaner which did find a lot of errors but it is still happening!

    Anybody else experience this??

Check to see if Drivers are up to date, could be an incompatible Driver issue

you should enter the recovery environment and do a system restore. Press F8 during boot, while holding the Shift key. Windows will have created a recovery point from the point right before it applied those updates.

Most fun I ever had doing this? An update killed my USB controllers, and all access I had to the computer through peripherals. fortunately, I had remote desktop options at the time or else I'd have been wiping the PC to rollback that.

I have checked the device manager and it is not showing up an issues (no yellow flags!)

Also I tried to look at the restore option as well but it keeps telling me there is no restore point - is this a feature of Windows 8?

It seems that the crash happens if the computer is left idle for any period over 5 minutes!

I did manage to get into a system restore option and it worked it's way through to the end and restarted but I then got the message that it was unsuccessful and gave me the error code 0x800703f1

Checking this online doesn't give me much info as the usual Microsoft response is to try 10 different things which don't work. Still seems weird that as long as I am using the computer - inputting data, typing etc, it does not crash. But as soon as I stop for any length of time 5-10 mins, it crashes!
