Can anyone advise me on whether I would be able to update my XP laptop with Win 7/8 with the below specs? (Taken directly from system information).

Laptop is 4.5 years old but still runs okay so would naturally like to avoid splashing out for a new one if possible.

Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Duo CPU
    T5870 @2.00GHZ

    2.00 GHz, 1.87 GB ram

    Physical Address Extension

I have a similar spec laptop. Bit slower CPU and bit more of ram (full 2gb) as graphics memory is separate, not shared like in yours.
It came originally with windows vista, but now runs on windows 8.1 no problem. Way faster than on vista anyway.
Only problem with yours might be poor graphics card, but I assume if you limit amount of fancy graphics effects on win8 it should work very well on your laptop

    Thanks.

I don't care about graphics so will give Win 8 a go so and look up how to tone down the graphical output.
