Quiet roads were quiet. Bliss

The roads were seriously quite going to cork this morning. Suited me as I had a big exam at 9am. In other news I'm back in the octavia this week as my dad needs the towbar on the focus later this week to pull a trailer. Put he was away yesterday and today for work and in the 2 days he has put almost 1k km on it. No hick ups either it mustn't be as bad as I make it out to be :pac:

    Lads, very lazy question here.

Anyone know what oil a 2000 Merc E200 takes?

    Is it 10/40?

I always use Halfords oil check facility. ;)

Sometimes cars like this will take both. Ie they run perfectly fine on 10w40 in irish climate as it never gets extremely cold well not often. And then 5w40 is specified for really cold climates where is constantly below 0 degrees c. Well this is what I found when I recently read up on what oil type to use for the octavia some recommend 10w40 others 5w40 but it's climate. Which 10w40 is normally fine for irish climate. Either way 10w or 5w will make no difference to the oil viscosity once it's up to engine temperature. However the 40 part is important as that's the viscosity the hot oil spends most it's time at.

    Thanks :)

Am doing 760 miles over the next three days and using the OHs car as it's automatic, but it has a very small oil leak so need to check the oil and keep it topped up.

Oil leak is so small that there are no drips on our driveway though, just being cautious.

As I said I don't think it will make much of a difference you could put 5w40 in it too be safe but I couldn't see much of a benefit. The octavia always gets 10w40 vw spec oil and It never caused any trouble over it. Older stuff like these cars I wouldn't be as fussed once the higher viscosity value is right and your not way off on the lower one. However with modern diesel that's a different story. The newer octavia gets vw spec low sap 5w30 that's about 60 quid. And my focus gets ford spec 5w30. I wouldn't give it a month if you through 10w40 in it these newer type engines are really fussy on oil.

I don't know whats come over me this evening but my classic car itch is back.

@stheno according to the castrol right oil for my car website.
For your E200 5w40 is find for temperature -25 to 30 degree c.
10w40 -20 to 30 degree so. So either or really. They also recommended 0w40 but I think that's to light to use no point making the leak seem worse :)

Really annoyed with myself after I badly scratched the nearside passenger door moulding off a stone wall today. I didn't get the metal luckily, so I should be able to replace it easily enough. I can't say it's anyones fault but mine, I put myself into a stupid situation, but it really wasn't helped by the others around me.

How will I go about fixing this? I'm well able to sand it down and prime it, but after that, whats the story with matching paint? I'd pay someone up to €100 or so for a proper respray, but not much more. The lower section is also plastic moulding that can be taken off.

    Long Story:
I was on a single lane country road, and came to a wider section, when the car driving very slowly in front of me stopped. I waited for about at least 30 second, and thought she was on the phone and wanted me to overtake as there was nothing coming. Passed her, continued a little, and of course met a Land Rover coming the other way. He wasn't stopping, and I had to reverse a little. The car I passed wasn't one bit happy and didn't reverse to give me space. I went back as far as I could, and the LR just kept coming. Got within an inch of the wall but didn't see a rock that was sticking out lower down.

Ahh that doesn't look anything major man. Have to be careful on these country roads, and you have to be better at reversing than driving forward :pac:

Lidl have car stuff on Thursday, seen a gammy add for it on tele there. Doesn't seem to be much useful in though!
Edit: I stand corrected, there actually is a half decent selection of stuff available.

Are they not one of those fancy steel wheels that looks like alloys cos of a fancy hubcap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,917 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

Yep, it's a steelie in the shape of an alloy so the hubcap is covering the steel parts. To be honest, you wouldn't know the difference if it wasn't for the cable ties!

I thought that too, hard to tell, kinda looks like one alright. Lol at them if it's only a hubcap!
Edit: looking at the comments under the pic, lots are saying its only a hubcap.

I'm all for it. Far easier to fix when you've a flat spot in them from a pothole. Few belts of a mallet :D

Track rod end nut came off today while on the curragh line offside wheel went completely inward.

So lucky I was only diving 10kmph turning into the yard at work or I was on my roof especially on the curragh line.

Still shaking. Not something that should ever come loose.
