Just in case you don't believe the scientific explanations for seasons ... we have pictures. This is an animation of pictures taken at the same local time every day (6am I think) from a geostationary satellite: in winter here in the Northern Hemisphere, the line is way over to the right, so you can see why the nights are longer.



Meanwhile, back on Earth, what happens if you do the same thing from the ground? Take a picture at noon every day, and the Sun follows a lopping pattern called an "analemma":



NB if the Sun's position looks "upside-down", it's because these pictures were shot in Australia, where they have Summer in January. :cool:
