Howya lads, am thinking of buying a horse to go pony racing with this season. Is anyone knowledgeable on the subject? Here is a horse I'm thinking of buying:

    http://www.donedeal.ie/horses-for-sale/throughbred-mare/6538800

By Medaaly(GB) out of Highest Honor(FR), who is a Pistolet Bleu(IRE) mare, anyone reckon would this horse be any good judging by pedigree or what ground this mare would like?

Thanks in advance for any help

Personally I wouldn't go near her for several reasons

First, she looks very poor in the main pic. Visible ribs.

Second, she is only just broken, if you are looking for a fun pony why not buy something with some form for that money?

Third, if she is slow, you will be lucky to get 100 for her - unsuitable for use as a leisure ride or hunter, there is no market whatsoever for small slow thoroughbred fillies

Having said all of the above if you are still interested make sure you have someone experienced lined up to gallop her before you do anything (assuming you aren't riding her yourself??)

I would be more involved in the show jumping myself so unlikely I would hear of anything but you never know.

A friend of mine has a son he wanted to start off and was basically given a couple of 2 year olds (Kylachy and Alflora) who were in pre training for breeze up sales but weren't coming up scratch/ hadn't grown enough from yearlings - their advantage over the one in the ad you posted would be that they had at least shown they could stand training, were fit and ride-able.

If you have a proper handler in mind I can guarantee you he will know where to locate something like the 2 above locally and cheaply for you. Do that instead of searching donedeal by yourself.

If you are to be competitive you would want a straight forward sort with a flat rating of about 60+. A lot of people underestimate the standard lot of horses pony racing are quite capable of winning on the track. For different reasons people go pony racing. I would go pony racing first get to know some of the lads and you will find want you want quite easily. I did what you are planning on doing a couple of years ago lets say you start thinking about the expenses involved very quickly:)
