When I turn on my PC (Dell running Vista that I got in Jan 2007) I get a black screen and 2 messages
-Alert! System Battery Voltage is low
-Alert! Previous shutdown due to thermal event

Can anyone please explain what this means? That I just need a new battery?

    Thanks

    System Battery Voltage is low

Yeah, more than likely the BIOS battery needs replacing.
It's a simple coin sized battery, you can even get a sheet of them in some discount stores.
-Alert! Previous shutdown due to thermal event

That probably means that the system fan / cpu fan is not working.
The CPU was overheating, to the point that it had to shut itself down.

Battery is usually a CR2032 as far as I can see.
