Just got our UPC bill today and thinking we probably aren't getting good value. 43.99/month for 30mb broadband - in fairness it's fast enough for netflix etc but does anyone know of better deals? We don't have a TV package but could be interested in one if not paying more than 60/month.
Everytime I look at sky, ups etc websites the prices are so confusing and the offers all seem to stop after 6 months. To be honest I'd be happy with just internet.

Check if Vodafone VDSL BB is available in your area?

€35 per month will potentially get you 70mb/20mb.

UPC also do a basics phone & 50Mb BB package for 37 a month (no BB only package) but if you are only on 30 now you may not be in one if their upgraded areas so BK's option may be better all round if you just want internet.

so I checked it out and am now upgraded to 120 mb/month and getting a modem in the post tomorrow (maybe I need a faster one?!) with UPC for same price. Seems too good to be true…. Hmm….

Yes, you need a new modem.

Your previous modem was a DOCSIS 2.0 model that only allowed you to go up to 30mb/s. The new modem will be a DOCSIS 3.0 model capable of up to 400mb/s (UPC currently sell up to 200mb/s).

The 120mb/s should work very well, though you might discover that you will get a much slower speed when connected over wifi. You need to connect by ethernet to benefit from the full speed.

    Eh…. what?
If it's gonna be slower I don't want it obviously!
    Ethernet sounds mysterious?

wifi wireless is limited. At best you will get about 80mb/s over wifi in the same room. The further you move from the modem, the less speed you will get, it could drop to as little as 20mb/s at the other side of the house.

This has nothing to do with UPC. It is simply the limitations of wifi and physics.

To get the full speed you will need to connect to the UPC modem using ethernet. Ethernet is just a type of cable which allows you connect your PC physically directly to the UPC modem.
