Its cool that your man did it - the problem is - with modern diesels - how viable an idea is the whole bangernomics idea going to be - or keeping costs of depreciation/maintenance etc down to 1200 for 70,000 miles - in the future.

As we all know - modern diesels can land you with a bill for getting on for twice that or more IN ONE HIT.

Does raise the question of whether we are in some respects heading in the wrong direction.

Thinking the way forward is to run something like the Corolla diesel outside - indefinitely - subject to parts like timing belts/waterpumps and other continuing to be available long term.

Its boring as a wet week - but I find the idea of 2 grand bills even more boring.

I have visions of Pandas, i10s, Aygos and the like suddenly becoming horrid popular all of a sudden.

you run a Panda or the like - bought for 1500 euro - as the main daily commuter if not doing big miles.

Keep a diesel Octavia bought with high mileage (so cheaper???) or the like for longer trips - minimise the mileage you do in it.

When the Octavia inevitably throws a hissy fit - you've still got the Panda to drive around in.

Alternatively - if you need an Octy for a weekend trip away - just hire one for the day/weekend from Mr Hertz/Mr Avis and their chumps.

When the Panda blows up - and is too dear to repair - just scrap it and go again.

Just thinking aloud here lads - Lancer in Petrol is another potential option - or a Fiesta.

Not something im actually thinking about doing at the moment - but may do - its just a concept that's in my head as I type - so just thinking aloud

Well part of the reason I said Octavia is that GENERALLY they aren't too bad as diesels these days go - the 2.0 tdi CR is pretty good as far as I know.

Problem is - you do run the risk of hitting big bills - hence why I said high mileage in the hope that a previous owner may have sorted some of it out for you :D

Of course I was just thinking aloud at the time :)

Ah I know I was Only messing :) The 1.6 tdi cr is a great engine to. I think it Is one of the better Diesel engine bring sold at the moment of that size anyway. I was in one with 250k km on it and it was perfect it's never been to the garage for anything other than a service. And it was in a long interval service schedule every 30k km serviced. My parents one has almost 80k km on it at this stage again it's never been to the garage other than for routine services although you wouldn't expect it to be at that mileage I suppose. But I do see your points there will always be more to go wrong on them.

My insurance disc fell out of its holder. 123 want 40 squid to replace one. Chancing having the certificate in the car instead of paying the replacement cert as renewal is soon.

When in the yellow Punto years ago, I never had an insurance disc for it(Quinn never issued me one). Drove for a month and a bit like that, no problems at checkpoints and the likes

Got stopped at a CP before for having no disk. Insurace company took ages sending it out. Was just told to produce it in 10 days at a station. All I had was an e-mail from them :).

Mention of high mileage Octavias - means this video from Bob Flavin at the Next Gear merits a look

The non-transfer of tax might be a bit of a pain for Irish motorists heading over to pick up a car.

I know that this is more consumer issues or whatever, but I'm buying car stuff off ebay and I don't have a paypal account, so I'm paying by credit card. I contacted the seller asking how to give them my credit card details for payment and they said to ring them and give them my details over the phone. Have any of ye gave ye're details over the phone. Would ye advise against it or does it matter?
Seller is on ebay 10 years and has 99.3% positive feedback.
