Question i wanted to ask, based on a thread I read, but didn't want to derail the thread (and not quite worthy of making a thread over, in my opinion):

Can any joe soap pull out the back seats (of a jeep) and pay commercial tax rates?

I know a chap that has a land cruiser. He was a contractor/self employed and bought the commercial version (bought new). Has since changed line of work and is now an employee of a company, but continues to tax the cruiser as a commercial. He reckons it doesn't matter what you work at or such, a commercial is a commercial and that's all there is to it?

Is he right? Wouldn't mind swapping up to a Hilux or something like that if I could get it taxed commercially (i used to be self employed and I still kind of am, but its not my main role/income any more, so not sure how that would affect me).

Alternatively, if I buy a second hand car that's already a commercial, can I just continue to tax it as a commercial regardless?

I've no real need for a commercial vehicle as such (but want and need are different things) but I have little use for my rear seats, so I wouldn't miss them.

Legally if it's not your business vehicle you shouldn't.

Realistically it's handy enough for a private use individual to tax a commercial vehicle.

my understanding is - you can only avail of the commercial rate of tax if using the vehicle as part of a business.

Its not even quite that simple - a farmer or a builder could use a commercial Landcruiser for their farming or building purposes and get commercial tax (a lot cheaper then paying 3 litre tax as a private vehicle) - but they can't use the same Landcruiser to go to a GAA match on Sunday if they avail off commercial tax.

That's my understanding of the rules from when there was a big uproar about it a couple of years or so back

Wed probably have a Hilux or L200 type crew cab here at home - if the rules were sensible.

Running a passenger Santa Fe on 2 litre private tax (the old CC rates) instead.

I think he's hinting at the law stating a commercial vehicle shouldnt be used for recreational use. It's 'illegal', I think.

What my real question is, though, is if I buy a hilux that's already taxed as a commercial, what do I do? Do I continue to just tax it as a commerial, or because its got a new owner, will it flag up on a system somewhere and I'll have to prove to someone that it's a business vehicle?

(ie; will i be left alone in it, or will i be pestered into showing that im using it solely for commercial purposes?)

You can drive it but technically it isn't taxed, so if you're stopped by the AGS then you will get in bother

Technically it not taxed at the correct rate. Not the same thing.

And you would want to meet a very p!ssed off ags member to be "done" for it.

Yeah, so on the way to the meet earlier OSI was tailing me for a few Km in his golf. I didn't know til after though. He thought I was flashing him with the hazard lights but I wasn't. I checked it out after and apparently brake assist kicked in. In fairness though, some of those backroads were scary as **** with really tight corners.

And what happens when he's not a dairy farmer? Next door neighbour uses his PPS number. Kildare CoCo seem to be happy.

Not sure exactly. Somewhere inbetween Kinnegad and Portlaoise.

Was a speed van just after you leave the last roundabout in Portlaoise towards Mountmellick on the left, darted up to 120 or so in typical fashion before being deafened by overrun, hope i was close enough to the car infront to not get nabbed :p

Just having a read through the owners manual for the Pirmera there. Some interesting things in it that I haven't come across in an owners manual before like instructions for washing the bodywork and the interior and the chrome parts and the underbody etc etc :)

Also after 366,000 miles there is, wait for it, 1 stamp in the service book, and that was at 1000 miles :p

    It's good alright :pac:

I also thought that the back windows weren't working but I opened one of the back doors and noticed that it had a manual winder :P Obviously it acquired a new drivers door card at some point in it's life with 4 buttons!

This one only had 2 owners before me so it is more lightly to have it :)

I'm not really concerned about the Gardai caring to be honest, it's just the paperwork side of things. Is it as simple as continuing to tax it as a commercial or do shannon send back a form ive to fill in asking why i need a commercial, etc.?

Thats the only aspect that really has me confused on it all.

    Speaking of which.

I was reading the Rav4's manual a while back.

I've never heard of this before and I've no idea if it's in every car, or what the craic is, but if you push the front seats forward as much as you can (ie; towards the dash), and take out the headrests, you can put the rear of the seat back flat, and it lines up with the back seats (to make one long surface).

The back seats in the Rav also recline, but not far enough to go flat.

What's the purpose of this? Is it so you can get a bit of sleep in it? I tried it out, and it's a class feature, but I admit it's not the most comfortable in the world. If the rear seats reclined fully you'd have no issue getting a decent sleep in it, but Ive never heard of this before. It's genius (assuming that's what it's actually intended for!).
