Later 323s are 1.6 - they're a bit nippier than the 1.5 and are usually very well specced.
The one I have has aircon and sunroof, side bags, traction control etc.

They tend to like their oil though and parts are pricey new and hard to find used.

Good to know. I'll look out of them.

A feature I'd really ideally like to have is ABS. Saved my bacon once being able to steer round a car that pulled out of a junction in front of me. I know that not all the Corollas had it and even fewer of the Focuses had it either.

Gut feeling is I'll probably end up with the Toyota. There's buckets of them about, so finding a clean one shouldn't be too hard.

The more I work on this Alfa, the more I think it's a seriously bodged car....! Obvious clock/bodge airbag fix and this evening I discovered the seats were put in by an ape  cue the consaw to cut them out and another set of rails bolted on!

I can't wait to fully strip this one down, what horrors are in hiding :D

No, not me silver ones either :)

I had a very productive/busy day yesterday. I was asked a few weeks ago in work to go out to Barbagallo raceway in Perth to a guy(75) who had recently purchased a new Falcon GT. Basically he was paying $500 for 8 hours work. That work was to rotate wheels or change brake pads etc. All I did was rotate his wheels the once and then after lunch he let me drive his car around there for 6 laps. What a buzz that was and he only paid $320 for a track day, think I'll bring my own very soon:)

Did they delete the ABS from the 00 models on the Corolla as a standard feture????

I thought the last of the round headlight 97 to 99 models - back in 99 all had ABS as standard for the 99 model year.

The 99 Corolla diesel here has ABS

I am however very much open to correction on this - im sure someone like Johnboy 26 or Colm McM will be able to confirm one way or the other.

A backwards step on Toyotas part imo if they deleted the ABS - on the 00/01 model

I'm certain it was fitted to all corollas around 1999 but became optional on the Ford Focus

According to my online googling everything apart from the Corolla S/Vida spec (now this is from a UK website so I presume it holds true here) had ABS. This is from 00-02.

I know Fords were pretty scabby with ABS.

That's what I though too  - at the start of 1999 Toyota made some minor changes to the Corolla - on the pre facelift 1.3 non VVTI and the old 2.0 diesel.

These were - black section of bumper which the 97/98 cars of this gen Corolla had was removed.

Changes were made to the upholstery

Silver grill (not sure if all had this???)

I thought the final change was - ABS as standard.

May have been other changes too but im not aware of them

As said the 99 Corolla we have here DOES have ABS

After doing the competition in Mondello last weekend (years sponsored racing, and no - I didn't win) I've come to realise that bateing around a track flat out is far more fun than standing around a mucky field all day. Even if it's raining you're dry and warm, right?

So time to buy a track car I reckon. Not gonna go wild, will probably spend less than a grand on something with a bit of go in it, preferably RWD for added fun factor. There has to be plenty of stuff like that around for cheap right? Big engined stuff that nobody wants, NCT failures, etc?

e36 bmw or something. Bigger the engine the better!

Yeah, a 323/325/328 coupe would be perfect. You would think they would be giving them away but there's fook all of them around, not at the price I'm talking anyhow. Mostly 318's.

Just use your e39 so. Be grand.

Too clean for that and not really powerful enough either. I want something I can trash! ;)

An s14 nct failure, €1.5k tops.

Massive reliability and small bolt ons and a map for 300bhp.

Yeah, but the problem is 41.5k becomes €2.5k pretty quick. That's all well and good but when there's a babbie en route and about €6k to fork out for consultant plus baby gear in the next six months that ain't an option.

I'm talking about spending €1k max on track. I.e. car + new tyres + new pads + high grade fluid.

You'd be lucky to be honest to get something for 1K

Youd surely get a little 106 Gti or something for small Money, Great car to thrash around on track :D

    I wouldn't fit in to a 106! :D

I'm talking 2L+, preferably RWD, doesn't need to be clean or tidy or have test or anything like that. Basically a big engined coupe that isn't falling apart. I'm gonna have to spend, what, €400 on tyres pads and brake fluid so purchase price will be cq. €600! :D

And €700 for a cage, be safe man :)

Allow 2k for all and get an e36 on that budget.

It's a grand or it's not gonna happen tbh.

No need for a cage in a track car unless you're a fookin lunatic IMO.

EDIT: Also a proper cage would cost WAAAAAAY more than €700 - unless you're gonna make it outta crutches of course! :D

    Ha ha :)

In fairness we got a serious cage for €700 in the s14a. To meet regs and all.

That's the same kind of answer as you'd get on a car query thread - "Buy an M3 and use the savings to pay for tax" :pac:

1k is his MAX for all inclusive for feck sake :P

I just think he needs to allow for a cage should something go wrong :)
I know a guy who does fantastic crutch cages :)

€700 is probably a bit low for a cage but you'd get a basic one for a couple hundred more.

How about this, and you can let your hair blow in the wind :p

The most important thing in a track car, especially an Irish one is handling, moreso than power. You'll run out of handling ability a long time before you'll run out of power.

There's a couple of cheap, relatively fast yokes for small bread. Not RWD but you can't have it all for that sorta money. ;)

What's wrong with any of them as a track car?

I've no problem throwing a regular car around a track sans cage but a vert? No. Fookin. Way.

What about the examples I posted above? Not RWD I know but still.......

I'd avoid the Opel. Handles terrible for a 'sporty' coupe. I can't comment on the Toyotas, but I know they have their issues. Get one in decent nick and they should be fine.

It kills me to say it, but it's hard to look past a Civic. How about this. I know it's over budget but would definitely be haggled to under budget.

    Or even better

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,880 ✭✭✭Kaiser D

Dare I say an Alfa Romeo GTV? :P

Or even an FTO, they can be bought pretty cheaply can't they?

The Celica has good breeding in it. Never drove a 5th Gen but had a 6th for a while and it handled great. Sure wasn't the 5th Gen a WRC winner a good few years on the trot? I realise the WRC model has SFA to do with the road going model but if it's good enough for Carlos Sainz it's good enough for me! :D

Civics? Not a hope, purely outta principle! ;)

I'm the same, but bang for buck there is very little better. :(
