(OK Mods, this a societal question more than a rugby question)

Why do the Irish Rugby team get so much publicity and the publicity they get is nearly always hugely positive?

The fact of the matter is hardly anybody plays the game, especially adults. A few pockets in Cork, Limerick, South Dublin and Protestant areas in the north. Most counties would have the ODD junior team. Compare that to the huge number of GAA teams and junior soccer teams

Most goys I know who will we watching the England game have NEVER played the game. As I would guess most people who attend the Ireland games would be the same.

Ryan Tubridy drools at the mouth whenever he interviews the goys
Brendan O’Connor telling is again what a great performance by the Irish rugby team
Hugely positive reports about our brave Irish team in print, radio & TV (Conor O’Shea I am looking at you)

    Yet, the facts are:

Ireland are ranked 6th in the world. Recently up from 7th. There are really only 10 decent rugby teams in the world as such. (Any rugger bugger would tell you that)

Irelands so called Golden generation have won ONE 6 nations Championship in 30 years!

    Golden Generation?

Yet Jonny, Jamie and all the goys are world class, outstanding, brave, phenomenal, fantastic performance etc.

    Really?

The coverage after the LOST to New Zealand was cringe worthy . A game they LOST

Personally, I think the D4 Posh boys give the sport and team way too much positive publicity when frankly they don’t deserve it

It’s just because they are part of the same snobby/ Old School tie Club. They are all mates, you see

And we as a nation (most of whom have never picked up a rugby ball) are sucking it all up

It would be very difficult to feed the masses by spoon. What with there being so many of them.
Some sort of self service facility inside of pavillions. Buffet.

I agree o.p, cant stand rugby, always was and always will be a protestant to me, a elitist sport followed by mostly west Brit types.

You seem to have quite the chip on your shoulder OP.

I'm educating myself. Wikipedia says the 6 Nations championship has only been going since 2000.

You are sucking it all up. I never heard of any of those people.
I have vaguely heard of some of them, but otherwise I can live a life completely oblivious to rugby, so less of the "we" stuff OP.

"Spoonfeeding the masses" is, ironically, a term that can be used to look down on people. And in fairness, lots of different types of people follow rugby now, not just "elites" (sometimes "elites" are in people's heads). I don't think it is considered an elite sport in Limerick either.

Lol at people who are insecure about it being followed by protestants (oh noez, protestants!) and "west Brits". Don't worry, plenty of people who fit your notion of "true Irish people" follow rugby too.

Just because people don't play it doesn't mean they can't appreciate it.

How many professional female soccer/top GAA players do you know? So, that's 50% of the population disenfranchised.

Rugby gets the attention it deserves. A tough, manly game with no players rolling on the ground like sissys if they get their ankle tapped.

Rugby is one of the few popular sports where we, as a nation, compete against other nations and are actually good at it.

Nothing like some mild sectarianism on a windy night like that.

    CS Parnell was Protestant btw.

So you only like Sports played by people of the same Religion as you? Do you look for proof that a Singer goes to Mass every week before you to to their concert?

I'm not mad about rugby. But my 6yr play for Lansdowne. There is about 60 other 5-6yr who play with him. Numbers for rugby grow at about 13yr old level.

Not much skill in the game, put plenty of team effort, more so than soccer.

So what, or do you mean because it is "English/British". Most of the popular sports in the world have an English/British origin.

    This is a myth

    More Irish Media garbage

    No other countries play it

10 Teams in the world play it to any reasonable standard.

6 in the northern hemisphere, 4 in the southern hemisphere - NZ, Aussies, S Africa, Argies and the 6 nations)

    We are ranked 6th

I don't think any reasonable person would count 6th out of 10 that as good

You might say we are below average or fair

You know who is 11th. The Mighty Fiji Islands

We are reasonably good at it because NOBODY PLAYS IT !

PS: We are good at hurling too because..............

    Golden Generation?

Brian O'Driscoll et al havn't been playing for 30 years. As for the golden generation shtick the media come out with, you can compare it to how the English media portray the English football team. Don't take any notice of it.

But even so why do you want to have coverage censored? Can't you just watch or read something else and let the minority that are interested continue to have their programmes.

Only 7 teams have reached the football World Cup Final in the last 11 World Cups. Does this mean that only 7 countries play it to any reasonable standard? In which case we can conclude the sport is not that popular?

Lionising any sports players is a bit silly, in my opinion, but I have my suspicions that the OP is just an embittered GAA fan jealous of the attention those dastardly rugby stars have been getting for the last decade and a half.

How come gaelic and hurling aren't **** because they only play it in Ireland, OP?

What proportion of people who watch formula one do you think have actually driven a formula one car?

Should people refrain from watching the winter Olympics unless they are accomplished downhill skiers/bobsledders etc.?

The reason rugby enjoys such broad coverage here is that it is one of the few sports that we are competitive in at a national level.

That's it. The rest of your diatribe about elitism etc. is your own stuff.

From my own experiences at having attended 2 international games, one not including Ireland,is that rugby supporters by and large are stiff upper lipped tosspots.

    you're right on OP.

I went to a rugby school and the odd thing is the most fervent leinster and ireland cheerleaders are those that never played.

Just can't understand how everybody cracks up over the thing

That's it exactly. I mean remember not too long ago when the cricket team were doing good and started getting RTE news mentions
