Hi, im a first year Theoretical Physics student and so far im not really liking the course and lately i've been thinking about transferring into computer science next year, i know i would have to start as a junior freshman again but i wanted to know roughly how much money it would cost and if Id be eligible for the grant again next year, any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Yikes - you would have qualified for "Free Fees" if you'd withdrawn or transferred before the end of Jan. Unless you can demonstrate exceptional circumstances (you don't feel a bout of depression coming on, do you?) you'll have to pay the tuition fees, which are just under 5k for computer science (plus Student Contribution).

If I were you, I'd inundate every conceivable admin dept with begging letters. It's highly unlikely that you'll get half your Student Contribution back (which you would have had you withdrawn before Jan 31st), but you may be able to persuade them to categorise your withdrawal as having happened under exceptional circumstances.

I went through this whole shi*, as well. I hope everything works out.

    Relevant docs:

    Undergrad Fees

    Refund of Fees

    Transferring Within Trinity

Edit: I see the bit about grant, which I presume means you qualified for Student Contribution payment.

Actually I got a full maintenance grant so I didn't have to pay student contribution this year but it seems like I'm stuck in TP seeing as the cost of switching is so high , oh well it's not like I hate the course I just feel I'd be better suited to computer science, thanks for the help anyway .

TPs do a fair bit of programming after JF and many of them go on to work in the IT sector. If you pick all the possible computational modules in years to come, maybe it won't turn out as bad as you think?

Transfer to 2nd year maths next year? Very common, maybe 4 in my year did it. Then in 3rd year you can do loads of computer science modules offered by comp science department and the school of maths. Want to start mentioning it soon, but transferring is easy enough.

Yeah from looking at the maths modules in 3rd and 4th year there seems to be a lot of options to do with computer science , also from looking at the first destination records on the careers website a few people have gone from TP straight into masters in computer science so it shouldn't be too hard , thanks for the help.
