Where to find spiced beef

I've heard (and read, thanks boards!

) so much about spiced beef this year - I've never heard of it before, but yet this year its all I heard and read about. And, well, I'm not usually one for following trends ... but I don't think I can refuse this one!!

Does anyone know a butchers around the Athlone to Carrick on Shannon/Boyle areas (or anywhere in between!) that does it? I've gone into 4 and no luck. 2 of those said they never had or will have it in. One needs a downpayment and days to get it in which they cannot plan and can only keep it for one day (all not a problem but I'm not often in that direction and couldn't really shoot there randomly to collect it) and the other said they'd get back to me (??

??) but haven't in over a week. So all in all not seeming to find it! So any help would be appreciated!

It used to be fairly specific to Cork, but it's becoming more common in other places now. Tom Durcan's is apparently available sliced in Centras and Super Values across the country, and you can also order it online: http://www.tomdurcanmeats.ie/spiced-beef.html

I've been buying it in Dublin for upwards of 30 years so it's not exclusive to Cork whatever those honey-voiced rogues would make you think. It seems to be a pre-Christmas product in many places. You might get lucky. Try phoning http://www.jameswhelanbutchers.com/ or get some silverside and make your own.

I have been told that some butchers actually put their corned beef into the spice mixture for a while, so if you do end up making your own that might present a reasonable shortcut.

Usually a Christmas product as an alternative taste and you may get some in Superquinn but you will need to be quick before it's gone for another year.

My understanding was that spiced beef was the last vestige of jewish cuisine in Ireland.
There was a fairly large jewish population in Cork until about the early 60's Mayor Gerald Goldberg being the best known.
